A cable break-away device for a rescue hoist connects a cable to a cable drum of the rescue hoist. The cable break-away device provides overload protection to the rescue hoist by disconnecting the cable from the cable drum when the loads transmitted through cable become excessive. The cable break-away device is configured to fracture, releasing the cable from the cable drum, when the loads experienced by the cable break-away device exceed a predetermined failure set point. As such, the cable break-away device forms a mechanical fuse connecting the cable to the cable drum.

A drive train for a rescue hoist includes a first stage, a second stage, and a third stage. The first stage receives an input from a motor and the third stage provides rotational power to a cable drum. The first stage, second stage, and third stage are disposed coaxially within a common housing. The first stage provides a first speed reduction, the second stage provides a second speed reduction, and the third stage provides a third speed reduction between the motor and the cable drum. The common housing includes a mounting flange for mounting the drive train to the rescue hoist.

A drive train for a rescue hoist includes a mounting portion for mounting the drive train within the rescue hoist. A load pin extends through the mounting portion and into a static structure of the rescue hoist to secure the drive train to the rescue hoist. The load pin is configured to sense the strain generated when the drive train imparts torque to the cable drum to rotate the cable drum. The sensed strain is communicated to a computer configured to calculate a torque generated by the drive train based on the sensed strain and further configured to calculate the load on the cable based on the sensed strain.

A level wind mechanism includes a first screw and a second screw extending through a block. A shoe is disposed within the block between the first screw and the second screw. The shoe includes a first follower for engaging with and being driven by a thread of the first screw and a second follower for engaging with and being driven by a thread of the second screw. Each thread includes cams at the terminal ends of the thread for causing the shoe to disengage from that thread and to shift to engaging the other thread. In this way, the first screw and the second screw cause the shoe, and thus the block, to translate relative to the first screw and the second screw.

Automatic reversing screw mechanism for cable winding

A rescue hoist includes a cable drum that translates along and rotates around a cable drum axis. The rescue hoist includes various components that are supported on the hoist frame and that extend at least partially through the cable drum. A first bellows is mounted to the frame and attached to a first end of the cable drum, and a second bellows is mounted to the frame and attached to the second end of the cable drum. The first bellows and the second bellows expand and collapse as the cable drum translates, such that the first bellows and the second bellows isolate the rescue hoist components from an operating environment as cable drum translates and rotates.

A hoist controller for a rescue hoist collects hoist operating data from one or more sensors during operation of the rescue hoist. The hoist controller compares the hoist operating data to a maintenance parameter stored in a memory of the hoist controller and determines a maintenance task status based on the comparison of the hoist operating data and the maintenance parameter. The hoist controller automatically initiates maintenance routines where the maintenance task status indicates that maintenance is required, and the hoist controller provides the maintenance routines to the user via a user interface. The hoist controller can confirm that the maintenance task was successfully completed based on maintenance data received from the one or more sensors.

Integrated hoist maintenance and method of hoist operation

A load sensing device for a rescue hoist includes a load pin mounted coaxially with a traction sheave. A cable extends from a cable drum and over the traction sheave before exiting the rescue hoist. The traction sheave is rotatably driven about a traction sheave axis to maintain a back tension on the portion of the cable extending between the cable drum and the traction sheave. When the cable is loaded, strain gauges in the load pin sense a strain on the load pin caused by the load, and the strain information is communicated to a load calculator. Entry angle information is also determined and communicated to the load calculator. The load calculator determines the load on the cable based on the strain information and the entry angle information.
