A method of examining a water supply for microbial contamination involves contacting a water supply with a novel reagent having high specificity for amicrobial species, wherein said reagent does not cross-react, or minimally cross-reacts, with a microbial species other than. The method further involves detecting, or measuring, a contaminating concentration of aspecies in the water supply. Useful reagents comprise at least one nucleotide sequence primer comprising a primer sequence selected from SEQ ID NO: 3-10 or a combination of such primer sequences. The increased specificity of such reagents permits more sensitive detection of microbial contamination.

Method and reagents for detecting water contamination

A synergistic microbicidal composition having two components. The first component is a nonionic surfactant with structure: RO(CHCH(CH)O)(CHCHO)H, where Ris a Calkyl group. The second component is 4,4-dimethyloxazolidine. The weight ratio of the nonionic surfactant to 4,4-dimethyloxazolidine is from 1:0.0286 to 1:0.1143 or 1:0.32 to 1:0.9143.
