Apparatus and methods for hybrid access to a core network. In one embodiment, a wireless router enables a subscriber device to connect to a core network via an intermediate network (e.g., a Wi-Fi network) rather than the network traditionally associated with the core network (e.g., a cellular network). In one implementation, a Wi-Fi Access Point (AP) is configured to directly connect to a Long Term Evolution (LTE) core network as a logical evolved NodeB (eNB).

Methods and apparatus for hybrid access to a core network

A repeater mediates traffic between a network transceiver and a user transceiver in a wireless communication system. The repeater comprises a network unit that maintains a network link with the network transceiver, a user unit that maintains a user link with the user transceiver, a two-way communication pathway between the network unit and the user unit; that facilitate the communication of signals between the network transceiver and the user transceiver in autonomous repeater hops between the network transceiver and the network unit, between the user transceiver and the user unit, and between the network unit and the user unit, and a gain controller that compensates for propagation losses between the network unit and user unit alone.

Short-range cellular booster

A two-way wireless repeater and booster system and method are disclosed. The system and method improve signal quality and strength for the middle hop of a three-hop repeater, between User and Network Units operating in the unlicensed bands (ISM and/or UNII), and supporting the cellular (or wireless) network communications channels. The system and method enables the support of a wider repeat spectrum or bandwidth for a given communications bandwidth in the unlicensed band.

A two-way wireless repeater and booster system and method with watermarking of uplink signals are disclosed. The repeater includes a network unit having at least one wireless receiver and at least one wireless transmitter, the network unit being configured to communicate with the network transceiver. The transceiver further includes a user unit having at least one wireless receiver and at least one wireless transmitter, the user unit being configured to communicate with the user transceiver, and a two-way communication path between the network unit and the user unit to communicate signals between the network transceiver and the user transceiver in autonomous hops comprising between the network transceiver and the network unit, between the user transceiver and the user unit, and between the network unit and the user unit. The network unit and/or user unit is further configured to repeatedly transmit a training sequence to the other unit to train the at least one channel equalizer of the other unit.

An OFDM modem is presented that uses a pilot sub-carrier signal structure for channel estimation to reduce link latency of the modem, or alternatively, a pseudo-random number sequence inserted into the OFDM signal for later detection for channel estimation. The OFDM signal includes multiple symbols, each symbol having a plurality of closely-spaced, orthogonal data sub-carrier signals carrying data. In some implementations, one or more pilot sub-carrier signals are inserted with the data sub-carrier signals. Each pilot sub-carrier signal is modulated with a predetermined pilot modulation scheme. Each pilot sub-carrier signal is placed at a different sub-carrier signal location for each successive symbol duration of the OFDM signal to form a sliding pilot sub-carrier signal.

Systems and methods for full duplex communications on a wireless link between two transceiver devices are disclosed. A first portion of outbound data is transmitted from one transceiver device to the other transceiver device on a first channel, while a first portion of inbound data from the other transceiver device is received on a second channel and the presence of a radiating source other than the inbound data is detected. A second portion of the outbound data is transmitted from the transceiver device to the other transceiver device on the second channel, while a second portion of the inbound data is received from the other of the two transceiver devices on the first channel and the presence of a radiating source other than the inbound data is detected.

Systems, methods and techniques for operating a wireless repeater with multiple antennas are presented. Signals from a wireless communication device are received by a wireless repeater on at least two branch channels associated with at least two repeater receiver antennas. Path or space diversity is resolved from the signals, and the signals are processed on the at least two branch channels to produce at least one strong signal to be repeated to another wireless communication device.

A cellular repeater and method of operating a cellular repeater are disclosed. The cellular repeater includes a variable-gain donor antenna adapted to communicate with a base station and a variable-gain server antenna adapted to communicate with a mobile device. A signal from a selected base station selected from one or more available base stations that are available to the cellular repeater is measured at the donor antenna. The gain of the donor antenna is adapted to maximize a signal level of the signal received at the donor antenna from the selected base station. A calibration signal from the server antenna is measured at the donor antenna to determine a radio frequency isolation between the donor antenna and the server antenna. The gain of the server antenna is adapted to maximize the radio frequency isolation between the donor antenna and server antenna.

Techniques and systems for mediating traffic between a network transceiver and a user transceiver in a wireless communication system are disclosed. A network link with the network transceiver is maintained using a network unit, and a user link with the user transceiver is maintained using a user unit. One or more replicas of a signal received from the network transceiver on a downlink path or from the user transceiver on an uplink path, respectively, are generated. The one or more replicas of the signal wirelessly are then transmitted on a hop between the network unit and the user unit along with a bi-directional control channel.
