Embodiments described herein provide a software-based privacy indicator for a camera and microphone that focuses not purely on hardware status (e.g., on or off), but on whether potentially private data is flowing to the system or an application. If based purely on hardware status, the indicator for an electronic device may be shown in scenarios where no data actually flows to the system or applications. The privacy indicator will be enabled if any camera or microphone data is relayed to the operating system or an application that is executed via the operating system. When the device uses the microphone and camera to capture environmental metadata about the surroundings of the device without providing any audio samples, images, or video frames to the system or an application, the privacy indicator will not be enabled.

An electronic device displays a media capture user interface that includes a media capture preview of objects in a field of view of the camera. While displaying the media capture user interface, the electronic device scans the field of view of the camera for data encoded in an optical machine-readable format. In accordance with a determination that the field of view of the camera includes data encoded in the optical machine-readable format that meets respective notification criteria, the electronic device displays a notification that indicates that the camera application has detected data encoded in the optical machine-readable format. An electronic device having a display and a touch-sensitive surface displays a mediate item representation corresponding to a sequence of images in a first display mode of user-selectable display modes, where the media item is part of a collection of ordered media items such that prior media item(s) precede the first media item and subsequent media item(s) follow the first media item in the order. In response to detecting touch input including movement in a direction, the device: upon determining that a subsequent media item corresponding to a second sequence of images is designated as being displayed in the first display mode, displays the subsequent media item in the first display mode, and upon determining that the subsequent media item is designated as being displayed in a second display mode different from the first display mode, displays the subsequent media item in the second display mode.

An electronic device having a camera, while displaying a live preview for the camera, detects activation of a shutter button at a first time. In response, the electronic device acquires, by the camera, a representative image that represents a first sequence of images, and a plurality of images after acquiring the representative image, and also displays an indication in the live preview that the camera is capturing images for the first sequence of images. The electronic device groups images acquired by the camera in temporal proximity to the activation of the shutter button at the first time into the first sequence of images, such that the first sequence of images includes a plurality of images acquired by the camera prior to detecting activation of the shutter button at the first time, the representative image, and the plurality of images acquired by the camera after acquiring the representative image.

User interfaces for capturing and managing visual media

An electronic device has multiple cameras and displays a digital viewfinder user interface for previewing visual information provided by the cameras. The multiple cameras may have different properties such as focal lengths. When a single digital viewfinder is provided, the user interface allows zooming over a zoom range that includes the respective zoom ranges of both cameras. The zoom setting to determine which camera provides visual information to the viewfinder and which camera is used to capture visual information. The user interface also allows the simultaneous display of content provided by different cameras at the same time. When two digital viewfinders are provided, the user interface allows zooming, freezing, and panning of one digital viewfinder independently of the other. The device allows storing of a composite images and/or videos using both digital viewfinders and corresponding cameras.
