A broadband network gateway (BNG) in a wireline network. The BNG includes an interworking function in a control plane (IF-CP), the IF-CP configured to use a control plane interface (N1'/N2′) between the BNG in the wireline network and a fifth generation (5G) core in a 5G network to couple a control plane of the BNG to a control plane of the 5G core; an interworking function in a user plane (IF-UP), the IF-UP configured to use a user plane interface (N3′) between the BNG in the wireline network and the 5G core in the 5G network to couple a user plane of the BNG to a user plane of the 5G core; and a transmitter configured to transmit data packets toward the 5G core after the user plane of the BNG and the user plane of the 5G core have been coupled.

Interactions between a broadband network gateway and a fifth generation core

A broadband network gateway (BNG) in a wireline network. A network coordinator device comprises a processor, a memory, a first port to operatively couple the processor to first network that uses media access control (MAC) addresses of a first size, and a second port to operatively couple the processor to second network that uses MAC addresses of a second size. The processor is configured to perform a network bridging protocol to bridge data frames communicated between the first network and the second network, including to translate communications between a device of the first network having the first size MAC address and a device of the second network having the second size MAC address, and adapt a frame format of the first network protocol to a frame format of the second network protocol. The adapting the frame formatting includes fragmenting data frames of the first network protocol when needed using a fragmentation format of the second network protocol.

The network component is capable of sending a first proxy binding update message to a second access network device to initiate a proxy care-of test; receiving a care-of keygen token from the second access network device in response to the first proxy binding update. The network component is configured to send a second proxy binding update message in response to the care-of keygen token to the second access network device to initiate a complete proxy binding update exchange. The network component is configured to receive a proxy binding acknowledge (PBA) message from the second access network device to establish a direct route between the network component and the second access network device.

A method for redirecting a device from a first home agent to a second home agent includes sending a first message to the first home agent, receiving a second message from the first home agent, and sending a third message to the second home agent. The first message includes a binding update, and the second message includes a binding acknowledgement and a redirect indication that the device is being redirected to the second home agent. The third message includes a binding update, and an address of the first home agent.
