A method and system for monitoring the traffic carrier performance of a CDMA carrier in a mobile communication system are provided. The method and system assign a preferred traffic carrier to each mobile station. During a drive-test, the preferred traffic carrier is assigned to the respective mobile station either originating or receiving a call. In the event of a dropped call, the system attempts to re-establish the call on the preferred traffic carrier to provide continuous monitoring on the same traffic carrier when the call is retried. If the preferred traffic carrier is not available when the BSC or base station assigns a traffic carrier, an alternate traffic carrier can be assigned at the call setup. After the call setup procedure is completed, a handoff procedure is initiated to transfer the call from the alternate traffic carrier to the preferred traffic carrier after a predetermined time if the preferred traffic carrier is available.

Method and system for monitoring traffic carrier performance in a mobile communication system

Soft handoffs in an IS-95 CDMA system or other wireless communication system are controlled using an enhanced set of soft handoff parameters which allow the system to adapt more readily to changing radio frequency (RF) conditions. In an illustrative embodiment, values for particular ones of the soft handoff parameters are selected in accordance with a set of rules, including rules such as, e.g., select the minimum value of add threshold among the members of an active set of pilots for a given mobile station; select the maximum value of drop threshold among the members of the active set; select the minimum value of drop threshold timer among the members of the active set; and select the minimum value of comparison threshold among the members of the active set. A quality measure is then determined for each of the members of the active set, based on one or more of the selected soft handoff parameter values and values of one or more additional parameters, e.g., add intercept, drop intercept and slope parameters, associated with those members. Particular values of the additional parameters are then selected based on the quality measures. The selected parameter values are then utilized in a soft handoff process, e.g., in a soft handoff process in which the given mobile station is directed to handoff from a primary base station to another base station of the system.

Methods and apparatus for enhanced soft handoff in a CDMA wireless communication system

A subscriber conversion system determines at least one code for an existing subscriber of a first wireless communications system to be converted to a second wireless communications system. When the existing subscriber obtains a wireless unit to be used in the second wireless communications system, the conversion system uses the at least one code provided to the existing subscriber to link existing subscriber information from the first wireless communications system to information associated with wireless unit for the second communications system, thereby improving the efficiency of the conversion process. For example, if a service provider wishes to convert from GSM to CDMA, the service provider can provide a secret code and an identification number, such as a directory number (DN), as the codes to the existing GSM subscriber. The subscriber obtains a CDMA wireless unit and commences an activation process to activate the CDMA wireless unit. As part of the activation process, the subscriber provides the secret code and the identification number to the conversion system. The conversion system determines if the secret code and the identification number correspond to the secret code and identification number provided to an existing GSM subscriber. If so, information which is characteristic of the CDMA wireless unit, such as the ESN, DN and/or IMSI, is associated with at least a portion of existing GSM subscriber information, such as billing information and/or features or services. As such, the conversion system uses existing subscriber information to reduce the time required to convert the existing subscriber to the wireless communications system based on the second radio standard.

Method for converting an existing subscriber to a wireless communications system

Call processing overload at a base station of a cellular wireless network is controlled by monitoring a level of call processing at the base station, and reducing a present handoff rate for active users when the call processing level exceeds a first threshold less than a maximum call processing capacity. When the call processing level at the base station exceeds a second threshold greater than the first threshold, a present rate of call originations or terminations is reduced while further reducing the handoff rate.
