A method of using a nanoporous carbon material for adsorption of one or more PAH and diesel fuel from an aqueous solution is described. The aqueous solution may comprise the one or more PAH at a concentration of 0.1 mg/L-1 g/L, and the diesel fuel at a concentration of 0.1-5 g/L. The nanoporous carbon material may adsorb at least 96 wt % of one or more PAH within 10 minutes. The nanoporous carbon material may be obtained by contacting a carbonized asphalt with a base.

Method of adsorbing contaminants using a porous carbon compound

A method of detecting and quantifying perchlorate contamination in samples, especially samples with complex background matrices such as food and produce with trace levels of perchlorate. A simple microwave assisted-electromembrane extraction provides simultaneous reduced extraction time, sample clean-up, high recovery and enrichment of perchlorate ions for detection and quantification by ion chromatography. Three parallel EME experiments connected to a single DC power supply improves the precision of the analyses. It also couples well with the multiple microwave digested samples and this reduces the sample preparation time and is hence suitable for routine environmental applications.

Method of detecting and quantifying perchlorate contamination

A liquid phase microextraction (LPME) method was developed for the determination of sulfur compounds in crude oils and its fractions (e.g diesel). Wide ranges of sulfur compounds including benzothiophene, dibenzothiophene and their derivatives were used as model compounds for extraction. After extraction, the analyses were performed by gas chromatography equipped with sulfur chemiluminescence detector (GC-SCD). Various experiments conditions influencing the extraction such as extraction times, extraction solvents, solvent volume and quantitative parameters were optimized to achieve higher extraction efficiency and high accuracy. The optimized conditions were applied to the determination of sulfur compounds in crude oil and diesel.

Simple method for the detection of sulfur compounds in crude oils and diesel

A method for removing chlorinated organic pollutants from an aqueous composition by electrocatalysis, including electrolyzing the aqueous composition, in a capillary reactor, with an applied potential of 1-5 kV, in which, during the electrolyzing, the aqueous composition is in contact with porous silica supported-sol-gel coated platinum and titanium catalysts and the electrolyzing forms hydrogen and hydrogen chloride.

Method to remove organic pollutants by electrocatalysis

An automated headspace solid-phase microextraction coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry for the determination of four N-nitrosamines in groundwater samples is developed. Response surface methodology technique was employed to investigate the optimized extraction conditions of headspace solid-phase microextraction using CombiPAL autosampler. The method was applied to determine the N-nitrosamine concentrations in groundwater samples.

Automated microextraction technique for the analysis of N-nitrosamines in water

A fully automated flow assisted-solid-phase microextraction (FA-SPME) is developed for the determination of chloroethers in aqueous samples. A CTC CombiPAL autosampler coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) is used to automate the extraction process. In this method, the SPME fiber is exposed to a sample in direct immersion. After exposure, the fiber is desorbed at the injection port of GC-MS.
