Systems and methods are disclosed herein for quantitatively identifying a patient's sedation level and predicting adverse events, based on one or more capnograms or outputs from a pharmacokinetic, pharmacodynamic, or ventilatory model. A sensor measures a carbon dioxide concentration of air exhaled by a patient into a breath receiver. A processor processes the sensor data to generate a capnogram including one or more respiratory cycles, computes the outputs of pharmacokinetic, pharmacodynamic, or ventilatory models, and extracts one or more of the resulting features from the capnogram and pharmacokinetic, pharmacodynamic, or ventilatory model outputs. A multi-parameter metric is computed based on the one or more extracted features and estimates the current or predicted sedation level of the patient.

Systems and methods for predicting adverse events and assessing level of sedation during medical procedures

Improved apparatus and methods for monitoring, diagnosing and treating at least one medical respiratory condition of a patient are provided, including a medical data input interface adapted to provide at least one medical parameter relating at least to the respiration of the patient, and a medical parameter interpretation functionality () adapted to receive the at least one medical parameter relating at least to the respiration () of the patient and to provide at least one output indication () relating to a degree of severity of at least one medical condition indicated by the at least one medical parameter.

Automated interpretive medical care system and methodology

A capnograph which performs an analysis of the breath waveforms measured by the carbon dioxide sensor, interprets the results of this analysis, and outputs to the operator diagnostic information about the respiratory status of the patient, or about the adequacy of the breathing support provided to the patient. The instrument compares a number of parameters characteristic of the waveforms of the patient's breath with an internal library of the values of those parameters expected from normal waveforms stored in its memory. These parameters may either relate to specific features of the waveform in the time domain, or may characterize spectral components of the waveform in the frequency domain. The capnographic waveform analysis may be combined with further non-invasive measurements in order to provide an indication of the deviation of the value of EtCOfrom PaCO.

Waveform interpreter for respiratory analysis

The invention presents techniques for identifying and guiding treatment for medical conditions, based upon the carbon dioxide concentration in the patient's breath. In an exemplary application, the techniques of the invention may be used to distinguish obstructive lung disease from restrictive lung disease, even though the symptoms of the conditions are similar. The techniques of the invention may further be used to monitor the effectiveness of the treatment.
