A method and a system are disclosed for providing session continuity in a 5G system. A wireless transmit receive unit (WTRU) may receive, from a session management function (SMF), a first Non-Access Stratum (NAS) message indicating a Packet Data Unit (PDU) session re-establishment. Upon receiving the first NAS message, the WTRU may determine an old PDU session ID based on the NAS message and generate a new PDU session ID. The WTRU may transmit a second NAS message indicating a PDU session establishment request. The second NAS message may include the old and new PDU session IDs. Upon receiving the PDU session establishment request, the SMF may determine that the old PDU session ID is associated with an existing PDU session for which the PDU session re-establishment is requested. The SMF may also determine that the new PDU session ID is associated with a new PDU session to be established.

Methods for supporting session continuity on per-session basis

Systems, methods, and instrumentalities are disclosed for media caching proxy techniques (e.g., applications) that enable caching of multimedia content delivered, for example, using the Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) protocol. A request may be received from a client for a media presentation description (MPD) file relating to media content. The media content may comprise a plurality of media segments. An MPD file may be received from cache. A subset of the plurality of media segments of the media content stored within the cache may be determined. An available bandwidth on a backhaul link may be determined. A dynamic MPD file may be generated based on the MPD file, the subset of the plurality of media segments of the media content that is stored within the cache of the middle box platform, and/or the available bandwidth on the backhaul link. The dynamic MPD file may be transmitted to the client.

Dash caching proxy application

A method and apparatus for bandwidth aggregation for an Internet protocol (IP) flow are disclosed. A sender may split IP packets on a single IP flow, and transmit the IP packets to a receiver via at least two interfaces. The sender splitting the IP packets over multiple interfaces may not send any signaling to the receiver. Alternatively, the sender may send information to the receiver for configuring distribution of the IP packets over multiple interfaces. The information may be carried on a binding update message, a binding acknowledgement message, or a binding refresh request message. The IP packets may be split and transmitted by a logical interface that sits between an IP layer and a layer 2, or by a bandwidth aggregation (BWA) middleware located between a transmission control protocol (TCP) layer and an IP layer.

Method and apparatus for bandwidth aggregation for IP flow

An abbreviated point-to-point protocol (PPP) negotiation in a wireless communication system is performed between a first peer, such as a mobile station, and a second peer, such as a packet data service node. The first peer sends a link control protocol option designated option X to the second peer. The option X identifies a user profile that includes at least one pre-negotiated point-to-point protocol parameter. If the second peer supports the user profile and the at least one parameter is acceptable to the second peer, the second peer acknowledges that the user profile is acceptable to the second peer. In response, the first peer acknowledges that the user profile is acceptable to the first peer. In response to both peers acknowledging that the user profile is acceptable, each of the peers sets a respective state machine in accordance with the user profile. If the second peer supports the user profile but one or more of the at least one parameter of the user profile is not acceptable to the second peer, the second peer sends a negative-acknowledgment to the first peer that identifies a second user profile that is acceptable to the second peer. If the second peer does not support the user profile, the second peer rejects the first user profile and a full point-to-point-protocol negotiation is performed without reference to any of the pre-stored user profiles.

Method of and system for mobile station abbreviated point-to-point protocol negotiation

A system and method in a General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) network for automatically configuring Network Service Entity Identifiers (NSEIs) in a Base Station System (BSS) and a Serving GPRS Support Node (SGSN) when the BSS is reconfigured. The Gb interface between the BSS and the SGSN is modified to operate using the Internet Protocol (IP), and the BSS and the SGSN are configured to run on IP. Whenever a new Network Service Entity (NSE) is added to an existing BSS, or a new BSS is added to the network, the BSS automatically sends a modified Network Service (NS')-Reset message to the SGSN requesting an NSEI. The SGSN dynamically allocates a free NSEI from a pool of NSEIs and sends it to the BSS. When an NSE is removed from the BSS, the BSS automatically sends a modified NS&#x2032;-Reset message to the SGSN to free an NSEI. The SGSN de-allocates the NSEI, and returns the NSEI to the pool of free NSEIs. All related entries for Base Station System GPRS Protocol (BSSGP) Virtual Circuit Identifiers (BVCIs) under the de-allocated NSEI are also removed by the SGSN.

System and method for automatically configuring network service entity identifiers utilizing a Gb-over-IP interface in a GPRS network

A Point-to-Point protocol (PPP) session with a mobile station is initiated in a wireless communication system. The session is negotiated by a first Packet Data Service Node (PDSN), which creates a PPP context for the mobile station for the session. The PPP context is added to a PPP register, which stores the PPP context indexed by the International Mobile Station Identifier (IMSI) of the mobile station for later retrieval if needed. In the event the mobile station is handed over to a second PDSN, such as when the mobile station roams and the first PDSN cannot be reached, the second PDSN retrieves the stored PPP context using the IMSI of the mobile station so that the PPP session can be resumed without a need for a complete renegotiation of the PPP context. The PDSNs further periodically re-register or update the PPP context on the PPP register. At the expiration of the PPP session, the PDSN directs the PPP register to delete the saved PPP context so that a new PPP context can be created the next time the mobile station initiates a PPP session.

Method and system for mobile station point-to-point protocol context transfer

A system and method of providing an integrated wireless telecommunications network including a cellular network portion and a packet-switched network portion. The cellular network portion provides legacy mobile telecommunications functionality to mobile subscribers. The packet-switched network portion is provided for transporting communication traffic, wherein the communication traffic comprises traffic originated from a mobile subscriber, traffic intended for a mobile subscriber, or both. The network also includes a gateway disposed between the cellular network portion and the packet-switched network portion for providing a communication path therebetween. An interworking interface module is provided between the cellular network portion and the packet-switched network portion. The interworking interface module preferably comprises a mobility gateway and an IP client (or proxy), wherein the mobility gateway handles mobility management information and the translation of control signaling information between the cellular network portion and the packet-switched network portion. The IP client handles communication traffic with one or more associated servers disposed in the PSN with respect to, e.g., mobility management, security/authentication, and subscriber services of the mobile subscriber.

System and method for providing wireless telephony over a packet-switched network

A method of preserving data packet sequencing between nodes in a radio telecommunications network in which the User Datagram Protocol/Internet Protocol (UDP/IP) is utilized to communicate between the nodes of the network. Sequencing numbers are added to the headers of a plurality of data packets which are transmitted over a plurality of data transmission paths. The UDP/IP protocol is adapted with a resequencing layer which is utilized at the receiving node to resequence the packets.

Method of preserving data packet sequencing

A system and method in a General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) network for interfacing a Base Station System (BSS) and a Serving GPRS Support Node (SGSN). A protocol stack in the BSS and the SGSN includes a User Datagram Protocol (UDP) layer over an Internet Protocol (IP) layer. Data packets are transmitted between functional entities in the SGSN and the BSS over a connectionless IP network. The protocol stack includes a Base Station System GPRS Protocol (BSSGP) protocol layer that provides radio-related, Quality-of-Service (QoS), and routing information that is required to transmit user data between the BSS and the SGSN. The stack also includes a modified Network Services (NS&prime;) layer which is divided into an upper NS&prime;-Network Service Control (NS&prime;-NSC) sub-layer and a lower NS&prime;-Sub-Network Service (NS&prime;-SNS) sub-layer. The NS&prime;-NSC sub-layer maps to the BSSGP layer and manages fictional entities therein. The NS&prime;-SNS sub-layer maps to the UDP and IP layers and provides access to the IP network. A single UDP port is reserved to make the NS layer and the BSSGP layer act as an application over the IP stack.
