The present invention provides thermosetting aqueous binder compositions of one or more diprimary diamine, e.g. lysine, or poly(primary amine), e.g. polyethylenimine, and one or more reducing sugar in which the number of equivalents of primary amine relative to the number of equivalents of carbonyl groups in the reducing sugar ranges from 0.4:1 to 2:1, the binders being suitable for use on fiber, nonwoven, woven web and finely divided substrates. The binders are at least substantially formaldehyde free, need no polycarboxylic or polycarboxylate component, and yet provide excellent hot wet tensile strength when cured for as little time as a minute or less in use.

Durable thermosets from reducing sugars and primary polyamines

The present invention provides compositions comprising particles or agglomerates of one or more phosphorus oxide telomer or cotelomer ((co)telomer) of one or more unsaturated carboxylic acids or anhydrides having a mean average particle size of from 2 &#x3bc;m to 1 mm, preferably from 5 to 500 &#x3bc;m, preferably, comprising at least one carboxylic acid anhydride group. In addition, the present invention provides methods comprising aqueous solution addition polymerizing a monomer mixture of one or more unsaturated carboxylic acid in the presence of a phosphorus oxide acid or salt compound, drying the resulting copolymer at a temperature of from 120 to 230&#xb0; C. and reducing its particle size to make a phosphorus oxide (co)telomer particle or agglomerate; the methods may further comprise reacting the (co)telomer particle or agglomerate with one or more polyether polyol, alkyl polyether polyol, polyether amine or alkyl polyether amine, with heating, to form a comb polymer useful, e.g. as a superplasticizer or dispersant.

The invention provides aqueous thermosetting binder compositions exhibiting both of improved flame retardation and wet tensile strength comprising a reducing sugar, a diprimary diamine or a polyprimary diamine, a phosphorus acid salt and from 3 to 20 wt. %, based on total solids, of an aqueous polymeric polyacid solution polymer containing phosphorus or its salt, wherein the aqueous thermosetting binder composition comprises from 0.7% P (s/s) to 5% P (s/s).

The present invention provides telomeric copolymers of acrylic and methacrylic acid which further comprise an olefin polymerization residue and have one or more phosphorus acid groups wherein the phosphorus acid group comprises one or more phosphorus atom in the +1 oxidation state or in the +3 oxidation state, or both. In addition the present invention provides methods of making the telomeric copolymers comprising aqueous solution copolymerizing a monomer mixture comprising acrylic acid and methacrylic acid in the presence of a phosphorus acid group containing reactant having a phosphorus atom in the +1 oxidation state, and thermally treating the resulting telomeric copolymer at 175&#xb0; C. or higher for a sufficient time to decarboxylate the copolymer.

The present invention provides thermosetting aqueous binder compositions comprising one or more reducing sugar, one or more diprimary diamine or poly(primary amine), and from 7 to 45 wt. %, based on total solids, of one or more polysaccharide having a dextrose equivalent (DE) value of from 5 to 30. The present invention provides aqueous compositions comprising &#x3b2;-hydroxy propyl gamma-polyoxyalkylene ether functional resins chosen from (poly)oxyalkylene ether &#x3b2;-hydroxy propyl (meth)acrylates, maleates and itaconates, water soluble copolymers thereof, and mixtures thereof. The water soluble copolymers are comb polymers and (meth)acrylate, maleate and itaconate monomer resins can be addition polymerized to form comb polymers suitable for many uses, such as superplasticizers, dispersants, detergents and floor care compositions. In addition, the present invention provides methods of making the resins by reacting in water or aqueous solvent one or more reactant a) a glycidyl polyether or glycidyl ether, optionally having an alkyl or aryl end group with one or more reactant b) a carboxylate anion containing vinyl compound or polymer, preferably a polymer such as poly(meth)acrylic acid. The methods enable simple formation of comb polymers.

The present invention provides stable aqueous thermosetting binder compositions having a total solids content of 15 wt. % or higher, preferably, 20 wt. % or higher, and having extended shelf life comprising one or more reducing sugar, one or more primary amine compound, and one or more stabilizer acid or salt having a pKa of 8.5 or less. The total amount of stabilizer used may range from 5 to 200 mole %, based on the total moles of primary amine present in the binder. The stabilizer may be an organic stabilizer chosen from a monocarboxylic acid, a dicarboxylic acid, a fatty acid, an acid functional fatty acid ester, an acid functional fatty acid ether, or an inorganic stabilizer chosen from a mineral acid, a mineral acid amine or ammonia salt, and a Lewis acid, and mixtures thereof. The compositions can be used to provide binders for substrate materials including, for example, glass fiber.
