A method and apparatus for simulating radio frequency propagation paths between radio frequency devices are provided. In an illustrative embodiment, the apparatus comprising a system controller for receiving and processing test data, a data sequencer configured to interact with attenuators and RF devices, and RF paths designed to simulate RF propagation paths. The method comprising steps to execute a multiple propagation path simulation based on various inputs including attenuators and electromagnetic environment inputs in accordance with various embodiments.

A method and apparatus for simulating radio frequency propagation paths between radio frequency devices are provided. A portable apparatus and a method for inserting digitized previously recorded or fabricated radio frequency (RF) pulse descriptor word (PDW) data files into an electronic surveillance (ES) system to realistically simulate a complex RF environment. The apparatus includes a personal computer and an electronics unit configured for easy integration into an ES system between the receiver and pulse processor. PDW data files are created on the personal computer and transmitted to the electronics unit as supplied PDW data. In the primary embodiment, real RF pulse data from the receiver is halted in the electronics unit and supplied PDW data and data from the receiver unrelated to PDW data, is passed in a continuous stream to the pulse processor. In a secondary embodiment, an upgrade in the electronics unit multiplexes both real RF pulse data and supplied PDW data for transmission to the pulse processor.

Pulse descriptor word generator

A pulse descriptor word (PDW) collector, including an extractor coupled to a computer, for passively collecting radio frequency (RF) data received by an electronic surveillance system (ESS). It is integrated into the ESS after a receiver (which converts RF pulse data to digitized PDWs) and parrallel to a presorter. Using two RAM circuits, the extractor forms a read/write loop to ensure that no PDWs are lost in the collection process. The extractor simultaneously writes onto one RAM while reading from the other RAM to the computer. The read/write functions of the RAMs are switched at predetermined interrupts. Collected data is stored on the computer hard drive. The computer controls the entire collection process by using data management software, graphical user interface software and sequencing software. Stored data is available on demand for analysis and is used to monitor, assess, and update the threat identification capabilities of the particular ES system.
