In a wireless communication system, a mobility factor is used to influence handoff. If a subscriber station has been in a low mobility state for some period of time, the system may handoff operation from a first service type to a second service type. If the mobility factor indicates that the subscriber station is moving, the system may handoff operation from the second service type back to the first service type.

Methods and apparatus for performing handoff based on the mobility of a subscriber station

A soft switch providing wireless PBX voice services to a local area network (WLAN) is used to extend PBX functionality to the cellular domain. A dual mode remote unit is capable of receiving signals both in the cellular system as well as the WLAN. The cellular system is comprised of a data-bearing path and a voice-bearing path. When the dual mode remote unit is within the WLAN, it communicates both voice over IP (VoIP) signaling as well as session initiation protocol (SIP) control signaling over the WLAN. When the remote unit is outside the WLAN, it communicates voice signaling over the voice-bearing path of the cellular network using a standard cellular voice channel. In parallel, it uses the data-bearing path of the cellular network to transmit SIP control signaling.

Extension of a local area phone system to a wide area network

A method and system determines whether the receiving subscriber unit is also part of a digital wireless telephone system that has compatible vocoding capability. If so, vocoded data is converted into tones that are introduced into a wire-based telephone system for routing to the appropriate receiving digital wireless telephone system. When these tones are received by the receiving digital wireless telephone system, the vocoded data is regenerated based on the tones and then transmitted to the receiving subscriber unit. If the originating and receiving wireless subscriber units are part of the same digital wireless telephone system, the steps of conversion to tones and introduction into the wire-based telephone system may be omitted, and the vocoded data is passed between the two digital wireless telephone systems via an all-digital connection such as an ATM packet network or a wire-based telephone connection where the integrity of digital information is assured.

Method and system for processing telephone calls involving two digital wireless subscriber units that avoid double vocoding

A system and method for providing connectivity to a foreign network for a device configured for communication over a home network without reconfiguring the device include intercepting packets transmitted by the device, selectively modifying intercepted packets which are incompatible with the foreign network to be compatible with network settings of the foreign network, and selectively providing network services for the device corresponding to network services available on the home network to reduce the delay associated with accessing the network services from the foreign network, or to provide network services otherwise inaccessible from the foreign network. Network services are provided by or through a configuration adapter connected to the device or to the foreign network. The configuration adapter accommodates incompatibilities resulting from proxy server requests, domain name server requests, and/or outgoing email service requests to provide transparent network access for mobile users without reconfiguration of the users computing device.

System and method for network access without reconfiguration

A method for communicating to a host information during an existing networking session. The method comprises the steps of establishing computer network access to a user's host through a gateway interface, creating information and control console packets at the gateway interface, sending the information and control console packets to the user's host, and generating an information and control console on the monitor of the user's host that comprises data. The data will typically comprise user-specific data based upon a user's profile, the chosen billing scheme, the chosen service level or the location from which the user desires access. The gateway interface is capable of transparently connecting the user/subscriber to multiple networks without the need to reconfigure the user's host computer. The information and control console allows the gateway administrator to provide information to the user/subscriber. The information and control console may include information relating to marketing, advertising, services offered and network session monitoring parameters and the like. In one embodiment the information provided for in the information and control console may comprise network session specific data. The user/subscriber can then act on the data provided to dynamically change the features of a current network session.

Information and control console for use with a network gateway interface

A method and system for processing telephone calls within a digital wireless telephone system is described. During the initiation of a telephone call from a wireless subscriber unit, it is determined whether the receiving subscriber unit is also part of a digital wireless telephone system that has compatible vocoding capability. If so, vocoded data from the digital wireless telephone system is converted into tones that are introduced into a wire based telephone system for routing to the appropriate receiving digital wireless telephone system. When these tones are received by the receiving digital wireless telephone system, the vocoded data is regenerated based on the tones and then transmitted to the receiving subscriber unit. If the originating and receiving wireless subscriber units are part of the same digital wireless telephone system, the steps of conversion to tones and introduction into the wire based telephone system are omitted, and the call is routed completely within that digital wireless telephone system. In another embodiment of the invention, the step of conversion to tones is entirely omitted and the vocoded data is passed between the two digital wireless telephone systems via an all digital connection such as an ATM packet network or a wire based telephone connection where the integrity of digital information is assured.

A method and apparatus for operating a wireless telecommunication system utilizing code division multiple access (CDMA) over-the-air with a Global System for Mobile communications (GSM) A-interface based network is described. A CDMA radio frequency (RF) signal interface provides a bi-directional interface to a subscriber unit, and a Global System for Mobile (GSM) communications A-interface SS7 transport provides a bi-directional interface with GSM mobile services switching center (MSC). Additionally, a transparent message transport is provided over which signaling messages defined in the GSM A-interface protocol are exchanged between the GSM MSC and a subscriber unit. Other signaling message generating by the GSM MSC and subscriber unit are processed and various actions are taken in response, including the configuration and control of signal processing resources. This configuration and control includes the allocation of vocoding and devocoding resources in accordance with the requested type of service, and the invocation of CDMA based encryption capabilities. Other actions include the allocation of CDMA traffic channel processing resources and selection resources at the start of a signaling exchange between the subscriber unit and the BSS or MSC. These resources process both voice and data calls, and signaling messages, such as registrations, from the subscriber unit. The CDMA traffic channel resources are used to perform the IS-95 style CDMA signal processing functions including modulation and demodulation.

Wireless telecommunications system utilizing CDMA radio frequency signal modulation in conjuction with the GSM A-interface telecommunications network protocol

The wireless system includes one or more payphones from which users may initiate payphone calls. A mobile switching center connects telephone calls initiated from wireless payphones to external telephone systems such as the public switch telephone network (PSTN). To meter charges incurred during the telephone call within an external system, the external system transmits periodic metering pulses to the mobile switching center. Each pulse is representative of a predetermined amount of money associated with the telephone call. The rate at which the periodic pulses are transmitted to the mobile switching center depends upon the current billing rate and may be affected by, for example, the time of day. Rather than the forwarding all of the metering pulses to the wireless payphone, therefore consuming a portion of the bandwidth available for wireless telephone calls, the mobile switching center calculates a steady state billing rate from the metering pulses, then transmits only the steady state billing rate to the wireless payphone. The ireless payphone calculates charges associated with the telephone call based upon the steady state billing rate and displays the resulting charges to the user. Once the mobile switching center has transmitted the steady state billing rate signal to the wireless payphone, a second steady state billing signal is not transmitted unless and until the billing rate for the telephone call changes as detected from a change in the rate of received metering pulses from the external system. In one arrangement, the mobile switching center filters out all metering pulses and transmits only steady state billing rate signals to the wireless payphone. In another arrangement, the mobile switching center transmits metering pulse signals to the wireless payphone until the steady state rate has been determined, then transmits a single steady state billing rate signal. If the billing rate changes, the mobile switching center again forwards metering pulses to the wireless payphone until the new steady state billing rate can be determined.

To provide an unique call ID number in a system comprised of a plurality of entities through which a connection may be established, each entity through which a connection can be initiated is capable of assigning a unique number to a new connection. For example a first entity receives a first request to initiate a first connection and assigns a first unique number to said first connection. The first unique number comprises the identity of the first entity, a time at which the first request was received, a distinction of the first request from any other request received at the first entity in a time block during which said first request was received, and an indication of a system with which the first entity is associated.

The wireless local loop system employs cellular technology to provide telephone service to fixed telephones of remote stations having otherwise conventional handsets. The remote station emulates a conventional public switched telephone network by providing an artificial dial tone from the handset of the remote station, after the handset is taken off-hook. The artificial dial tone is locally generated by the remote station. The system, however, delays providing the dial tone if the system is busy, i.e. if the system is under a load condition. To this end, the system monitors load levels and transmits signals to the remote stations indicating load conditions. A remote station, prior to granting at dial tone to the user, receives the load condition signals, determines whether the system is currently under load and, if so, defers the dial tone. Hence, if the system is under a load condition, such that no lines or frequency channels are available, the user is not presented a dial tone until a line or channel becomes available. By deferring the dial tone until a line or channel is available, the wireless local loop system more effectively emulates a PSTN.

A method and apparatus for paging a concentrated subscriber system for wireless local loop within a cellular telephone system. Within a mobile telephone switching office (MTSO) a visitor location register is generated in which a subscriber unit identification number (SUIN) for every subscriber unit registered within the area of coverage is stored along with corresponding telephone number, last cell site, and concentrated subscriber system (CSS) status information. The SUIN can correspond to the electronic serial number (ESN), mobile identification number (MIN), or other unique identification code assigned to each subscriber unit. When a call directed to a subscriber unit having a particular telephone number is received the corresponding SUIN, CSS status information, and last cell site information of that subscriber unit are determined using the visitor location directory. In response to this determination a paging code is calculated in various manners depending on the resulting CSS status information of the subscriber unit being paged. If the subscriber unit being addressed is part of a CSS the paging code used to generate the paging message is calculated in a first manner such that it is the same for each subscriber unit within a particular CSS. If the CSS status information indicates that the subscriber unit being paged is not part of a CSS the paging code is calculated in a second manner such that it is different for each subscriber unit. A set of paging parameter are then calculated using that paging code which in the preferred embodiment include a CDMA channel, a paging channel, and a paging slot. The page message is then transmitted in accordance with those paging parameters. In the preferred embodiment the page message generation process using the paging parameters is the same as that of the prior art cellular system in order to maintain maximum compatibility with those prior art systems.
