Provided is a thin film semiconductor device that exploits excitonic characteristics of various organic semiconductor materials. The device may include an anode (), a cathode (), and a donor-acceptor heterojunction () disposed between the anode and the cathode. The donor-acceptor heterojunction may further include an acceptor material () having a highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and a lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO), and a donor material () comprising a hybrid organic-inorganic metal halide perovskite semiconductor. Other embodiments are disclosed and additional embodiments are also possible.

Donor-acceptor interfaces for excitonic semiconductors

In one aspect, organic-inorganic nanoparticle compositions are described herein comprising engineered surfaces which, in some embodiments, reduce non-radiative recombination mechanisms, thereby providing optoelectronic devices with enhanced efficiencies. In some embodiments, a nanoparticle composition comprises a layer of organic-inorganic perovskite nanocrystals, the organic-inorganic perovskite nanocrystals comprising surfaces associated with growth passivation ligands and trap passivation ligands, wherein the growth passivation ligands are larger than the trap passivation ligands and are of size unable to incorporate into octahedral corner sites of the perovskite crystal structure.

Surface engineered organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite nanocrystals and applications thereof

Organic-inorganic perovskite nanoparticle compositions are described herein. In some embodiments, a nanoparticle composition comprises a layer of organic-inorganic perovskite nanocrystals, the organic-inorganic perovskite nanocrystals comprising surfaces associated with ligands of size unable to incorporate into octahedral corner sites of the perovskite crystal structure.

Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite nanocrystals and methods of making the same

In one aspect, solid-state organic intermediate-band photovoltaic devices are provided. A solid-state organic intermediate-band photovoltaic device, in some embodiments, comprises an organic electron donor and an organic electron acceptor, wherein the organic electron donor comprises a singlet energy level separated from a triplet energy level by an energy gap. The device also comprises a triplet sensitizer comprising singlet and triplet energy levels falling within the singlet-triplet energy gap of the electron donor.

Solid-state organic intermediate-band photovoltaic devices

Measurements on organic single crystals reveal remarkable optical and electrical characteristics compared to disordered films but practical device applications require uniform, pinhole-free films. Disclosed herein is a process to reliably convert as-deposited amorphous thin films to ones that are highly crystalline, with grains on the order of hundreds of microns. The disclosed method results in films that are pinhole-free and that possess grains that individually are single crystal domains.

Method and device for using an organic underlayer to enable crystallization of disordered organic thin films

The disclosure relates to organic photovoltaic cells comprising a heterojunction structure formed by a first organic donor layer and a first organic acceptor layer, and further comprising a second organic acceptor layer adjacent to the first organic acceptor layer and/or a second organic donor layer adjacent to the first organic donor layer. The materials of the first acceptor layer and the second acceptor layer are selected to allow exciton dissociation by charge transfer at their interface, and to simultaneously allow exciton energy transfer at their interface. The materials of the first donor layer and the second donor layer are selected to allow exciton dissociation by charge transfer at their interface, and to simultaneously allow exciton energy transfer at their interface. Organic photovoltaic cells of the present invention may have a high short-circuit current density, a good open-circuit voltage and a good fill factor.

Organic photovoltaic cells with enhanced photocurrent

The present invention is directed towards a thin-film device. In one embodiment, the thin film device comprises a scattering layer comprising a substrate, the substrate comprising a plurality of voids, and a device stock formed atop the scattering layer, wherein the plurality of voids have a high refractive index as compared to a refractive index of the substrate. Another embodiment of the present invention is directed towards a process for fabricating a thin-film device, the process comprising dissolving a precursor in an organic solvent to form a solution, coating the solution onto a substrate to form a film, immersing the film and the substrate into an antisolvent bath for a first period of time so as to form a plurality of air voids within the film, removing the film and substrate from the anti-solvent bath to dry and cure for a second period of time to create a porous film adhered to the substrate, the porous film and the substrate forming a scattering layer.

Process for fabricating a porous film in a scattering layer

A device is provided, having a first electrode, a second electrode, and a photoactive region disposed between the first electrode and the second electrode. The photoactive region includes a first photoactive organic layer that is a mixture of an organic acceptor material and an organic donor material, wherein the first photoactive organic layer has a thickness not greater than 0.8 characteristic charge transport lengths; a second photoactive organic layer in direct contact with the first organic layer, wherein the second photoactive organic layer is an unmixed layer of the organic acceptor material of the first photoactive organic layer, and the second photoactive organic layer has a thickness not less than about 0.1 optical absorption lengths; and a third photoactive organic layer disposed between the first electrode and the second electrode and in direct contact with the first photoactive organic layer. The third photoactive organic layer is an unmixed layer of the organic donor layer of the first photoactive organic layer and has a thickness not less than about 0.1 optical absorption lengths.

High efficiency organic photovoltaic cells employing hybridized mixed-planar heterojunctions

A method for fabricating an organic photovoltaic cell includes providing a first electrode; depositing a series of at least seven layers onto the first electrode, each layer consisting essentially of a different organic semiconductor material, the organic semiconductor material of at least an intermediate layer of the sequence being a photoconductive material; and depositing a second electrode onto the sequence of at least seven layers. One of the first electrode and the second electrode is an anode and the other is a cathode. The organic semiconductor materials of the series of at least seven layers are arranged to provide a sequence of decreasing lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals (LUMOs) and a sequence of decreasing highest occupied molecular orbitals (HOMOs) across the series from the anode to the cathode.

Architectures and criteria for the design of high efficiency organic photovoltaic cells

An organic photovoltaic cell includes an anode and a cathode, and a plurality of organic semiconductor layers between the anode and the cathode. At least one of the anode and the cathode is transparent. Each two adjacent layers of the plurality of organic semiconductor layers are in direct contact. The plurality of organic semiconductor layers includes an intermediate layer consisting essentially of a photoconductive material, and two sets of at least three layers. A first set of at least three layers is between the intermediate layer and the anode. Each layer of the first set consists essentially of a different organic semiconductor material having a higher LUMO and a higher HOMO, relative to the material of an adjacent layer of the plurality of organic semiconductor layers closer to the cathode. A second set of at least three layers is between the intermediate layer and the cathode. Each layer of the second set consists essentially of a different organic semiconductor material having a lower LUMO and a lower HOMO, relative to the material of an adjacent layer of the plurality of organic semiconductor layers closer to the anode.

The disclosed technology relates to a light-emitting diode (LED) and a method of fabricating the same. In one aspect, the LED includes a GaN p-n junction formed at a junction between a p-type GaN layer and an n-type GaN layer. The LED further includes a first metal electrode layer provided on the p-type GaN layer, where the first metal electrode layer is configured to reflect light emitted by the p-n junction towards a light emitting side of the LED. The LED additionally includes an attachment layer interposed between and configured to electrically connect the p-type GaN layer and the metal electrode layer, wherein the attachment layer comprises a transition metal oxide and is configured to transmit light emitted by the p-n junction and to transmit light reflected by the metal electrode layer.

Light emitting diode and method for fabricating the same

An organic optoelectronic device and a method for manufacturing the same are disclosed. In one aspect, the device has a stack of layers. The stack includes a buffer layer and a first organic semiconductor layer adjacent to the buffer layer at a first side of the buffer layer. The buffer layer includes at least one transition metal oxide doped with a metal.

Method for fabricating organic optoelectronic devices

The present invention generally relates to organic photosensitive optoelectronic devices. More specifically, it is directed to organic photosensitive optoelectronic devices having a photoactive organic region containing encapsulated nanoparticles that exhibit plasmon resonances. An enhancement of the incident optical field is achieved via surface plasmon polariton resonances. This enhancement increases the absorption of incident light, leading to a more efficient device.
