Embodiments of the invention are directed to dental compositions comprising: (1) at least one cationically reactive compound; (2) at least one cationic photoinitiator; (3) at least one compound which is: an organic monomer, oligomer or polymer, said compound comprising at least one reactive oxirane, oxetane, or alkenyl ether, (4) at least one compound which is: an organic monomer, oligomer or polymer, said compound comprising at least one reactive acrylate that is capable of forming an interpenetrating network; (5) at least one free radical initiator; and (6) at least one compound which is: an organic monomer, oligomer or polymer, said compound comprising at least one reactive acrylate or methacrylate and at least one oxirane, oxetane, or alkenyl ether.

Such methods generally comprise: combining a metal-containing material with a resin in situ; and curing the resin in the presence of a metal-containing material. There are disclosed amphoteric nano-sized metal oxide particles functionalized with silyl esters of a phosphonate and composites thereof with an acrylate-based monomer, including liquid crystal monomers photopolymerizable at ambient temperature. Metal oxide and metal oxide-silica nanoparticles are disclosed wherein the surfaces thereof are complexed with a polymerizable, biocompatible, heterocyclic base. Polymerizable compositions are prepared by loading such nanoparticles into acrylate based monomer matrices, which compositions can then be photocured into X-ray opaque, transparent or translucent solids. Methods are disclosed for forming such complexed nanoparticles and compositions and for using such compositions as medical or dental restoratives.

Methods and compositions are provided for enhancing the bonding of polymeric materials to substrates via silane coupling agents. The methods involve depositing an oxide layer, such as alumina or silica, to a substrate, for example stainless steel. Next a silane coupling agent is applied which forms a strong chemical bond with the oxide layer. This layer is then coated or contacted with a polymeric substance. The resulting composite provides a strong adhesive bonding of substrate to polymer.
