Sensing arrangements for a handpiece sense suction pressure or fluid flow within a suction path to determine the position of a movable cutting element relative to a fixed cutting element of a cutting accessory. A controller calculates actual speed of the movable cutting element from measured pressure or measured fluid flow. The cutting elements have openings that, when aligned, form a window. The controller controls power to a motor that drives the cutting element. When the handpiece is deactivated, the controller stops the movable cutting element at a predetermined position to close or partially close the window. The controller controls the cutting speed in view of joint pressure combined with suction pressure, or in view of fluid flow through the suction path, to maintain an optimal fluid flow rate that enhances the cutting action of the cutting accessory. Pressure or flow sensors may detect a clog in the suction path.

Sensing arrangement for control of powered cutting device

A cutting accessory for use with a powered surgical tool. The accessory includes a drive shaft to which an outer hub is attached. Internal to the outer hub is a self-contained transponder formed from an RFID chip and a coil of electrical conductor embedded within a solid substrate or encapsulated within a plastic enclosure. The transponder wirelessly communicates one or more pieces of information concerning the identity and operation of the accessory to the surgical tool when the accessory is attached to the surgical tool.

An elongated cutting accessory for performing endoscopic surgery. The accessory includes an inner tube to which a cutting member is attached and an outer tube that encases the inner tube. The outer tube may have first and second proximal and distal sections that are arranged end to end. The inner and outer diameters of the proximal section of the outer tube are greater than the corresponding diameters of the adjacent distal end section. An annular gap separates the outer surfaces of the inner tube with the inner surfaces of the outer tube. Irrigation fluid can be flowed through this gap. In some versions of the invention, two spaced apart hearing sleeves extend between the inner and outer tube. The distal of the two sleeves is formed with a channel through which the irrigation fluid can flow to a distal end opening in the outer tube.

Elongated endoscopic cutting accessories

A surgical tool designed for irrigated microsurgery or pediatric surgery. The tool includes an outer hub that is fixed to a complementary handpiece. An outer tube extends forward from the outer hub. An inner hub is coupled to a drive member integral with the handpiece to rotate in unison with the drive member. An inner tube extends forward from the inner hub and is disposed inside the outer tube. A cutting member is located on the forward end of the inner tube. The inner wall of the outer tube and the adjacent outer wall of the inner tube are in close proximity to each other. Irrigation fluid is introduced between the tubes through an opening in the outer hub. The outer wall of the inner tube is formed with a flat that extends longitudinally along the tube from the section of the inner tube that is subtended by the opening for the irrigation fluid to the distal end at which the cutting assembly is located. The flat defines a channel between the tubes through which the irrigation fluid flows from the opening to the cutting assembly. A suction from the surgical site is drawn through the center of the inner tube and the inner hub.

A cutting blade assembly for use with a handpiece having a motor for rotatably driving the cutting blade assembly. The handpiece has a bore therein for receiving the cutting blade assembly. The cutting blade assembly includes an elongate tubular outer member having a distal end with an opening thereat, a proximal end, a hub unremovably secured to the proximal end so as to be a permanent part of the outer member. The hub is configured to be directly received and engaged in the handpiece bore. An elongate inner member is received in the outer member and has a distal cutting end disposed adjacent the opening in the distal end of the outer member. A proximal end of the inner member is adapted to be received in the handpiece bore and rotatably driven by the motor to rotate the inner member in the outer member. The cutting blade assembly includes the elongate tubular outer member having a radially inwardly facing surface along the length thereof with at least one elongate axially extending groove therein, the groove terminating at both the proximal and distal ends of the outer member. The cutting blade assembly also includes the outer member additionally having an irrigation liquid connection structure and a window through a wall of the outer member for providing liquid communication between the liquid connection structure and the elongate axially extending groove so that liquid will traverse the axial extent of the groove and to the opening. Bearings relatively rotatably support the inner and outer members and the irrigation liquid bypasses the bearings through the groove.

An irrigation surgical tool system comprises a motorized handpiece, a tool for insertion in the handpiece, a console including a mounting plate and peristaltic pump rotor and a tube set including a cassette installable on the console for peristaltic pumping of irrigation liquid to the tool. Passages in the tool allow irrigation liquid flow, between a fixed outer tube and rotating inner tube of the tool, to a surgical site, through windows in the tool inner and outer tubes. Application of suction to the tool enables withdrawal through the inner tube of irrigation and surgical debris from the surgical site.

Surgical irrigation pump and tool system

A surgical tool (10) for chucking in a powered surgical handpiece, comprising an outer tubular member (11) with an opening (41) at the distal portion thereof. An inner tubular member (30) is movable in the outer tubular member and comprises a bendable inner tube (36) of flexible polymer material and a tissue working tip (40) extending forward from the distal end of the inner tube. The inner tube has a radially enlarged distal opening recess (62). The tip includes a reduced outside diameter, proximally extending, annular flange fixed within the inner tube distal recess (61). The annular flange of the tip is formed with hills and valleys (63, 64). The inner wall of the inner tube that defines the recess is formed with hills (65) that seat in the valleys of the annular flange so as to lock the tip to the inner tube. The annular flange is further shaped so as to extend into the recess a distance less than the overall length of the recess. Consequently, the inner tube immediately below the end of the annular flange has a section of reduced wall thickness.

A powered rotatable surgical tissue working tool for chucking in a powered rotating surgical handpiece includes a tubular elongate outer member having a distal tip portion angled off the central axis of the proximal portion of such tubular outer member, by reason of a angled portion therebetween. A rotatable elongate inner member extends coaxially and rotatably within the tubular outer member and has a rotatably drivable proximal portion, a distal tip portion for tissue working interaction with the distal tip portion of the outer member, and a flexibly bendable portion therebetween rotatably housed within the angled portion of the outer member. A suction passage communicates between the distal tip portions thereof and the handpiece for permitting suction withdrawal of flowable materials from a surgical site axially through such suction passage and to a suction source. An annular space is maintained between the flexible portion of the inner member and the angled portion of the outer member despite rotation of the inner member.
