A low energy wood screw that may be inserted quickly and using less energy than conventional screws. In various embodiments, the screw may include a countersunk head having a recess for accommodating a driving tool, a tapered neck, a plurality of crown ribs extending over the head and neck, a lubricating coating, main threads with a large thread lead, and lower threads having an asymmetrical profile and extending onto a gimlet point.

Various embodiments described herein provide a fastener system having straight walled driving surfaces that provides a reliable stick fit feature, while also improving stability of engagement between the system components. A feature of the new system is to allow engagement of existing standard straight walled drivers in the new system.

A fastener is provided comprising a shank having a head at one end and a tapered tip at the other end, and a threaded section having a helical thread on the shank. The fastener also comprises, on the head, side surfaces for engagement with a driving tool, and wherein each of the side surfaces has at least one rib formed thereon. Also provided is a method for driving a fastener, comprising providing a shank having a head at one end, a tip at the other end, and wherein the head comprises side surfaces for engagement with a driving tool, and wherein each of the side surfaces has at least one rib formed thereon. The method further comprises providing a driving tool having driving surfaces, and driving the fastener with the driving tool by engaging the driving surfaces of the driving tool with the at least one rib of the side surfaces of the head.

A fastener is described having a head formed with a recess which accommodates a square head driver, symmetrical drivers, such as PHILLIPS&#x2122; style drivers, asymmetrical style cross head drivers, such as POZIDRIV&#xae; style drivers, and combination square and cross drivers without compromising performance of the drivers.

Recessed head fasteners are provided with a configuration by which the force applied by the blades of the driver to the recessed wings is applied at the radially outer regions of the wings. The wings of the fastener recess may be provided with torque pads at the outer regions of the wings adapted to engage the outer portions of the driver blades. The torque pads may be defined by relieved regions on the drive walls of the recess wings. The relieved regions are formed to avoid contact with the driver blades. Stabilizing ribs also may be defined at the radially inward regions of the drive walls. A recess engageable driver may include a plurality of radially extending ribs configured to promote engagement of the ribs with the most radially outward regions of the recess drive walls. The driver and the recess are compatible with each other as well as with otherwise corresponding conventional recesses and drivers that do not incorporate the invention. Also disclosed are punches and methods for making the disclosed fasteners.

A fastener is constructed having four thread zones constructed over the length of the fastener, from the head to the tip, namely a ridged cylindrical holding zone, a ridged cylindrical transition thread forming zone, a rectilobular tapered thread forming zone, and a rectilobular alignment zone. The pitch cross section of the thread varies in each zone.

A threaded screw has a first segment adjacent the screw head (10) with nontapered sides for engaging metal automotive fastener clip nuts (30) and a second segment with tapered sides for engaging plastic bosses (24). The second segment is adjacent the first segment but distant from the screw head (10). A single set of threads (36) is used for both the metal clip nut (30) and the plastic boss (24). The threads (36) have a helical pitch angle (P) of about nine degrees and form a flank angle (.beta.) of about thirty degrees relative to a horizontal axis (20) of the screw. The screw taper matches the taper of the boss opening (22) to promote even stress distribution.
