An indicia reader system includes: an indicia reader for reading symbol indicia and producing a symbol signal representative of the symbol indicia, the indicia reader capable of transferring and receiving data formatted in a plurality of protocols; a controller capable of transferring and receiving data formatted in a plurality of protocols; and, a translation interface for translating data from the controller which is in a first protocol to a second protocol for receipt by the indicia reader.

Method for updating indicia readers

An optical reader, which is operable in a 'host commands' mode and a 'host routines' mode. In the &#x201c;host commands&#x201d; mode, the reader receives and executes a script routine module from a host. In the &#x201c;host routines&#x201d; mode, the reader receives a script routine Module identifier from the host, and the reader, in turn, executes a selected one of a plurality of reader-stored script routine modules based on the identifier.

There is provided herein an encoded information reading terminal such as may be provided for by a bar code reading terminal for operation in a network such as a retail store network that is configured in one embodiment to automatically enter a unique association mode of operation subsequent to wirelessly receiving a radio address from one computer of a plurality of computers, e.g., a cash register address from one cash register out of a plurality of cash registers. In one embodiment a bar code reading terminal can be configured to wait for a cash register address to be wirelessly received as part of a connection request initiated from one cash register out of a plurality of cash registers. A bar code reading terminal can be configured so that when operating in a unique association mode, a bar code reading terminal transmits all decoded bar code messages output by the bar code reading terminal to an external device to the one cash register sending its cash register address.

A method and system for self-checkout of items from a retail or non-retail establishment is disclosed. The system verifies security by comparing a measured physical characteristic of an item with the stored security characteristic for that item and determining if the measured physical characteristic is within an operator-modifiable tolerance range. The operator-modifiable tolerance range is different for different of items in the store. Moreover, a stored security characteristic of an item can be updated automatically. In addition, the system includes a dynamic-weight scale that reports a measured weight before the scale settles.

The invention is a data editing system for configuring a data collection device to edit decoded-out message data according to a data editing routine specified by a user programmer. In one embodiment the system includes a data collection device and a host processor assembly including a display, a user interface and a program builder program which displays on the display either representation of instructions being authored by the user-programmer or prompt messages prompting the user-programmer to information respecting requirement of the message data to be output by the data collection device. In response to information input by the user programmer, the program builder program builds a set of data editing instructions, and the set of data editing instructions are transmitted to the data collection device.

A calibration technique for a storage phosphor reader which accomplishes the following; a) finds the leading edge of the storage phosphor being read by the reader; b) finds the front and rear edges of the storage phosphor in order to adjust the length of the line scan to the dimension of the storage phosphor in the line scan direction; c) verifies that the photodetectors of the reader are functioning; d) adjusts each photodetector signal channel to the appropriate gain; and e) generates a correction signal to correct nonuniformities of the photodetector signal output.
