A network system that reduces the computational resources to centrally-control network nodes in a border gateway protocol (BGP) network. More particularly, the systems and methods describe the control of a plurality of individual network nodes by a centralized controller, and the use of a route control server (RCS), which is connected to the centralized controller, or OpenFlow Controller (OFC). By treating the plurality of individual network nodes as a single combined network node, the route control server is able communicate using a single BGP speaker, and hence, reduce the computational resources from that required to run an individual BGP speaker for each individual network node.

Systems and methods for reducing the computational resources for centralized control in a network

A system, apparatus, and method for link layer address resolution of overlapping network addresses is disclosed. In one aspect, the method performed on a first device includes receiving a first address resolution request from a second device, the first address resolution request having a sender network address and a target network address, wherein the target network address is an overlapping network address that is a gateway address of the second device and a network address of a third device, creating a first address resolution response having a sender link layer address associated with the first device, and sending the first address resolution response to the second device.

Methods and apparatus for efficiently enabling routing states to be recovered after a failover or during a software upgrade in a system which supports graceful restart and stateful switchover are disclosed. According to one aspect of the present invention, a method for restarting a network device which has a plurality of routers and is in communication with a first peer being arranged to support graceful restart and a second peer includes performing a graceful restart with respect to the first peer. A peer transparent failover is performed with respect to the second peer. The graceful restart and the peer transparent failover are performed in response to a failure associated with the network device.

Routing system and method for transparently rocovering routing states after a failover or during a software upgrade

A method and apparatus resynchronizes a link state database (LSDB) of router with the LSDB of a neighboring router ('neighbor') while maintaining an existing adjacency with the neighbor in a computer network. An out-of-band resynchronization process executes on the routers to essentially maintain the existing adjacency between the router and neighbor, rather than resetting that adjacency as defined by a conventional resynchronization approach. By keeping the adjacency 'up' from the perspective of a routing protocol, such as the Open Shortest Path First routing protocol, the adjacency can be used for continued data traffic to and from the router.
