A wearable device for augmented reality applications including an image generation engine to generate multiple light rays forming an image, and an eyepiece including a display to project the image to a user for an augmented reality application, is provided. The eyepiece includes a planar waveguide configured to transmit the light rays from the image generation engine. The wearable device also includes at least one optical element configured to couple the light rays into, and to provide the light rays from, the planar waveguide and through an eyebox limiting a volume that includes a pupil of the user, and a user-functional portion of the eyepiece including the at least one optical element, the user-functional portion shaped according to a pre-selected format that is aesthetically appealing to an onlooker when the immersive reality device is worn by a user.

Smart glasses with enhanced optical structures for augmented reality applications

Aspects of the present disclosure are directed to controlling optical parameters at a user's eye using an artificial reality system and tracked user conditions. For example, based on tracked user eye positioning, implementations can adjust the light that enters the user's eye to control an image shell generated at the user's eye. An image shell refers to the way light, that enters the eye, focuses on the retina of the eye. Example properties of an image shell include image shell centration, image shell curvature, image shell shape, etc. A user may focus on an object in an artificial reality environment (e.g., real-world object or virtual object) and light from the object can generate an image shell at the user's eyes. The image shell at the user's eyes can impact the user's vision and/or eye biology.

An optical device for a head-mounted display device includes a first partial reflector and a second partial reflector positioned relative to the first partial reflector so that the second partial reflector receives first light transmitted through the first partial reflector and reflects at least a portion of the first light toward the first partial reflector as second light. The first pupil-replicating waveguide is configured for receiving an input beam of image light and providing an intermediate beam comprising multiple offset portions of the input beam. The second pupil-replicating waveguide is configured for receiving the intermediate beam from the first pupil-replicating waveguide and providing an output beam comprising multiple offset portions of the intermediate beam.
