Techniques are disclosed for streaming digital content from a server to a client device in a way that is tailored to the context in which the client device is used. The context in which a client device is used may refer to, for example, the operational characteristics of the device and/or the environmental conditions under which the device is used. A client device can be configured to collect contextual data characterizing its use context. The way in which streaming media is delivered to the client device can be adjusted based on such contextual data, and in particular, can be adjusted in a way that tailors the content delivery to the specific use context. This can improve user experience and conserve battery and network resources, for example, by avoiding the streaming of high definition content to a device that, due to its use context, is able to render standard definition content.

Context-aware streaming of digital content

Various embodiments are generally directed to techniques for evaluating video quality of compressed versions of a motion video to select compressed frames of that motion video without access to an uncompressed version. A device to transmit motion video includes a device scoring component to select a set of coefficients from a vector correlating temporal complexity values to sets of coefficients based on a temporal complexity of a first compressed frame of a first compressed video data, the vector derived from opinion scores associated with at least one viewing characteristic of a viewing device; and a selection component to select either the first compressed frame or a second compressed frame of a second compressed data to transmit to the viewing device based on a metric of video quality derived from the selected set of coefficients, the first and second compressed data representing a motion video. Techniques for evaluating compressed motion video quality

The disclosure generally relates to a method, apparatus and system to deploy aquatic sensors to obtain oceanographic data. In an exemplary embodiment, a free-floating or untethered sensor receives signals from different transmitters. The signals may be configured to travel through air and/or water. The sensor records each signals' time of arrival and determines its location in relationship to known transmitters based on the signal travel time. The position of each sensor may be determined by triangulation to several devices whose positions are known. The distances from the sensor in question to each device is measured by means of time-of-flight measurements for a wireless signal from the sensor to each known-position device. Other methods such as trilateration or dead-reckoning may also be used. The sensor may additionally collect and record oceanographic or other environmental data.

Techniques are described to transmit multimedia content to a mobile station using a combination of a mobile/cellular network as well as a TV Whitespace (TVWS) network. Scalable video coding can be used to transmit a baseline layer of multi-media content using the mobile/cellular network and one or more enhancement layers over the TVWS channels. Joint source-channel coding can be used to adjust the transmission scheme used by mobile/cellular and/or TVWS based on end user experience.

In one embodiment of the present invention, an output device sends a spurious data sample in place of a first data sample to be sent from a queue if the queue is in a state of underflow during which the first data sample is not available to be sent. The buffer is to store data samples for an isochronous data transmission. Circuitry skips the first data sample when the first data sample becomes available in the queue so that synchronization for subsequent data samples sent from the queue is preserved. In another embodiment of the present invention, an input device advances an input buffer pointer to point to a next location in a memory in response to receiving a data sample at a queue during a state of overflow. The input buffer pointer indicates a location in the memory to which a next data sample is to be sent from the queue. The queue stores data samples for an isochronous data transmission. By advancing the input buffer pointer, synchronization for subsequent data samples is preserved.

A first set of modem data pump parameters is generated based on characteristics of a telephone line to achieve a first data reception bit-rate in a modem data pump.
