The present invention relates to methods of use for photocatalytic cleaning compositions and photocatalytic cleaning compositions effective to degrade soils deposited on a surface, to reduce the accumulation of soils on a surface, and to act as an antimicrobial agent.

Surface cleaner

A fibrous catalyst comprises at least one transition metal anchored to a polymer fiber having a plurality of grafted units grafted to a polymer backbone. The polymer backbone may be a polyolefin, a fluorinated polyethylene, cellulose or viscose. The grafted units comprise a salt of a carboxylic acid, which in a preferred embodiment is a sodium salt of acrylic acid. The catalysts are particularly suitable for scavenging oxygen from sealed packages or containers and may further comprise a chemical indicator for the presence or absence of oxygen.

A Pt(IV) complex of the formula ##STR1## wherein A and A' are NH.sub.3 or an amino group; R and R.sup.1 are hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, aralkyl, alkylamino or alkoxy or functionalized derivatives thereof; and X is halogen or alkyl mono- or dicarboxylate. The complexes have high antitumor activity, particularly when administered orally.

A process for making a polymer-modified electrode comprising electrocatalytic metal, a metal substrate (1) and small polymer particles (2) by contacting the substrate with a (preferably aqueous) dispersion containing the particles and also a dissolved compound of electrocatalytic metal of greater electronegativity than the metal of the substrate, whereby contacting the substrate with the dispersion cause spontaneous deposition of electocatalyst, which in turn causes desposition of the particles onto the substrate, and then drying the substrate and deposit at a temperature below the softening point of the polymer. The deposited particles retain their shape and only a few are mutually contiguous, with the result that the poison resistance of the electrodes is increased and their overpotentials are reduced. Also, electrodes in which at least 70% of the particles are fully spaced from their neighbors and the amount of particles deposited is preferably from 0.0005 to 2 cm.sup.3 m.sup.2 of substrate surface. The electrodes are useful as chloralkali cathodes.

Process for making a polymer-modified electrode and process using same

A solvent extraction process for the separation of one or more precious metal species from other precious metal species and possibly also base metal species contained in an aqueous acidic solution of the type produced during the recovery of precious metals from ore or scrap in which the solvent contains an extractant which is a mono-N-substituted amide. Also a mono-N-substituted amide extractant. The extractant permits better separation factors generally and also enables platinum to be extracted before palladium and permits improved extraction of iridium from rhodium.

A catalytic process for hydrogenation of unsaturated organic compounds is carried out in a two-phase aqueous/organic medium, in which the catalytic complex is dissolved in the aqueous phase and to which is added an amphiphilic reagent to facilitate phase boundary crossing of dissolved species. Catalyst separation from reaction products is thereby rendered more efficient. The catalytic complex is preferably formed in situ and contains a water-soluble phosphine ligand, preferably a hydroxy- or carboxy-aryl phosphine.
