A method of using blowing agent compositions to produce foamed plastics such as polyurethanes, polyesters and the like, wherein a major auxiliary source of blowing agent for the foam is the decomposition of dialkyl dicarbonates. The dialkyl dicarbonates can be decomposed over temperatures ranging from about 10.degree. C. to about 45.degree. C. when used in combination with particular tertiary amine decomposition catalysts.

Dialkyl dicarbonates as blowing agents for polymers

The present invention pertains to a composition of matter and to a method of using the composition to produce foamed plastics, wherein a major, auxiliary source of blowing agent for the foam is the decomposition of dialkyl dicarbonates. The dialkyl dicarbonates can be decomposed over temperatures ranging from about 10.degree. C. to about 45.degree. C. when used in combination with particular tertiary amine decomposition catalysts.

Polyurethane foams containing halogenated phosphorus-based flame retardants are protected from scorching by the incorporation therein of an anti-scorch package which comprises a diaryl arylenediamine, the reaction product of a diarylamine and a lower alkyl ketone, and a hindered phenol.

Reduction of discoloration in flame retarded polyurethane foams

Incorporation of from about 0.001% to about 5% of a mixture of an N-alkanoyl-N,N'-dialkyl-phenylenediamine compound (e.g. N-heptanoyl-N,N'-di-sec-butyl paraphenylenediamine) and a fluorescent brightener (e.g., a bis(benzoxazole) substituted thiophene) in a flame retarded polyurethane foam formulation stabilizes the formulation against scorching as the foam is formed therefrom.

Method of preventing scorch in a polyurethane foam and product thereof

Incorporation of from about 0.01% to about 5% of an N-alkanoyl-N,N'-dialkyl-phenylenediamine compound (e.g. N-heptanoyl-N,N'-di-sec-butyl-para-phenylenediamine) in a flame retarded polyurethane foam formulation stabilizes the formulation against scorching as the foam is formed therefrom and also improves the indentation load deflection of the foam.

A polyester polyurethane foam formulation useful in medical pads to support bedridden patients is described. The foam is formed by reaction of a polyester polyol, isocyanate and blowing agent combination of water and halogenated hydrocarbon auxiliary blowing agent. A halogenated flame retardant, e.g., an organophosphorus compound, is present. A liquid char forming and dripping ember retardant additive is also present.

A method of evaluating the probability of scorch in flame retarded flexible polyurethane foam without preparing a large quantity of foam is described. A microwave oven is utilized to heat a foam sample pursuant to the invention. The method is useful to predict the probability that flame retarded foam will scorch on curing and therefore can be used to avoid damage to large commercial quantities of foam. The method can also be used to screen flame retardants for polyurethane foams.

Method of evaluating scorch in flexible polyurethane foam

The color qualities of low density polyurethane foams produced with certain flame retardants is improved by reducing scorch through incorporation of a mixture of diphenyl p-phenylenediamine and the reaction product of diphenylamine and acetone into the foam. The mixture can be employed by admixing with the flame retardant from about 0.5 to about 5.0 percent of said mixture by weight of the flame retardant. The weight ratio of diphenyl p-phenylenediamine to the reaction product of diphenylamine and acetone is from about 1:20 to about 20:1.
