An optical device may include a laser component to emit a source beam and an optical component to split the source beam to generate a first beam and a second beam. The optical device may include a multiplexing component to multiplex the first beam and the second beam to form a first multiplexed beam, an optical system to receive the first multiplexed beam and demultiplex the first beam and the second beam, and a scanning component to scan a field of view with the first beam and the second beam and receive the first beam and the second beam reflected from the field of view. The optical system may multiplex the first beam and the second beam reflected from the field of view to form a second multiplexed beam, and a demultiplexing component may demultiplex the first beam and the second beam reflected from the field of view.

An optical device may comprise a laser configured to generate an optical beam and a Mach-Zehnder Interferometer (MZI) configured to amplify the optical beam. The MZI may comprise a first coupler and a second coupler connected via a plurality of arms of the MZI. An arm, of the plurality of arms, may provide an optical path for part of the optical beam and may comprise a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) configured to amplify the part of the optical beam and a phase shifter configured to adjust a phase of the part of the optical beam.

An optical device may include a lens system. The optical device may include a first scanning component to receive an optical beam and to scan the lens system with the optical beam. The optical device may include a second scanning component to receive the optical beam from the lens system and to scan a field of view with the optical beam, where the lens system is positioned between the first scanning component and the second scanning component. The lens system may include a beam expander.

A light detection and ranging (lidar) receiver may include a first frequency filter to pass a first range of frequencies of an analog signal. The lidar receiver may include a second frequency filter to pass a second range of frequencies of the analog signal that is different from the first range of frequencies of the analog signal. The lidar receiver may include a first analog-to-digital converter (ADC) to derive a first digital signal based on the first range of frequencies of the analog signal using a first sampling rate. The lidar receiver may include a second ADC to derive a second digital signal based on the second range of frequencies of the analog signal using a second sampling rate that is different from the first sampling rate.

An optical device may include a package having a first port for receiving signal light, a source for providing pump light, a combiner for combining the signal light and the pump light into combined light, a second port for sending the combined light, a third port for receiving amplified light, and a free-space optical system for filtering amplified signal light from the amplified light, and a fourth port for sending the amplified signal light. The free-space optical system may include beam shaping optics that enlarge a beam size of the amplified light prior to the filtering.

A method may include receiving, by a switching engine, an optical signal that includes a channel. The method may include applying, by the switching engine, a first beam steering grating to direct a first portion of the channel to a first output port. The method may include applying, by the switching engine, one or more second beam steering gratings to direct at least one of a second portion of the channel to a second output port, or a third portion of the channel to a photodetector. The third portion may be approximately less, in power, than 10 percent of the channel.

A wavelength selective switch (WSS) may include a first port array including input ports, each to launch a respective beam of light, and a dispersive element to separate, in a lateral direction, a beam of light, launched by one of the input ports, into dispersed wavelength channel sub-beams. The WSS may include a switching array to direct the dispersed wavelength channel sub-beams, at respective angles in a vertical direction. The dispersive element may converge groups of dispersed wavelength channel sub-beams in the lateral direction to form wavelength channel sub-beams. The WSS may include a splitting element to split, in the lateral direction, a wavelength channel sub-beam, of the wavelength channel sub-beams, into split wavelength channel sub-beams. The WSS may include switching elements to direct the split wavelength channel sub-beams at respective angles in the vertical direction, and output ports associated with the switching elements.

A method may include receiving, by a switching engine, an optical signal. The optical signal may carry a super-channel that includes a plurality of sub-carriers to be directed toward respective output ports. The switching engine may have a plurality of regions of pixels on which respective sub-carriers, of the plurality of sub-carriers, are incident. The method may include applying, by the switching engine, respective single beam steering gratings to first, overlapping, areas of the plurality of regions of pixels. The method may include applying, by the switching engine, one or more respective pluralities of beam steering gratings to second, overlapping areas of the plurality of regions of pixels. The method may include directing, based on the single beam steering gratings and the one or more pluralities of beam steering gratings, parts of the optical signal toward the respective output ports.

Super-channel multiplexing and de-multiplexing using a phased array switching engine

The number of wavelength selective switch (WSS) units in a WSS device can be doubled by using polarization properties of optical beams propagating through the WSS device. Beams from different WSS units are orthogonally polarized at the front end, propagated through collimator, wavelength dispersing element, and a focusing element, and impinge on a polarizing beamsplitter, which directs sub-beams at different polarizations to different directing elements of a director array. A polarization diversity configuration at the back end can be used to reduce polarization dependent loss.

A multicast optical switch uses a diffractive bulk optical element, which splits at least one input optical beam into sub-beams, which freely propagate in a medium towards an array of directors, such as MEMS switches, for directing the sub-beams to output ports. Freely propagating optical beams can cross each other without introducing mutual optical loss. The amount of crosstalk is limited by scattering in the optical medium, which can be made virtually non-existent. Therefore, the number of the crossover connections, and consequently the number of inputs and outputs of a multicast optical switch, can be increased substantially without a loss or a crosstalk penalty.

A MEMS arrangement is provided that has a top plane containing a rotatable element such as a mirror. There is a middle support frame plane, and a lower electrical substrate plane. The rotatable element is supported by a support frame formed in the middle support frame plane so as to be rotatable with respect to the frame in a first axis of rotation. The frame is mounted so as to be rotatable with respect to a second axis of rotation. Rotation in the first axis of rotation is substantially independent of rotation in the second axis of rotation.
