An injector for injecting fuel for an engine, which injector comprises a nozzle, a fuel injection orifice in a transverse face of the nozzle, a valve obturator for closing the orifice, a vibrator for vibrating the nozzle to cause the valve obturator to move away from the orifice to allow fuel to be injected, and a housing for the valve obturator, the housing: (A) being fixed in position, (B) having an open downstream end, and (C) being positioned adjacent the orifice but spaced apart from the transverse face of the nozzle by a distance which is not large enough to allow the obturator to escape through the space defined by the housing and the transverse face of the nozzle.

Fuel injector

A method of producing a fuel injector as herein defined, which method comprises securing the housing to an elongate member and securing the elongate member to the end of the injector remote from the orifice.

Method of producing a fuel injector

A low pressure fuel injection system for an engine, which system comprises an injector having a body, a fuel passage in the body, an outlet orifice, a valve obturator element, a spring which causes the valve obturator element to close the outlet orifice on its downstream side, and vibrator means for vibrating the injector to move the valve obturator element away from the outlet orifice to enable the fuel to pass through the outlet orifice.

Low pressure fuel injection system

An injector for injecting fuel for an engine, which injector comprises a nozzle, a fuel injection orifice in the nozzle, a valve for closing the orifice, a vibratory device for vibrating the nozzle to cause the valve to move away from the orifice to allow fuel to be injected, and a stop device for limiting the travel of the valve away from the orifice, the stop device being movable whereby during use of the fuel injector the injected fuel for the engine can be varied to suit the engine requirements at any given time by moving the stop device so as to control the travel of the valve injection rate through the orifice.

A boiler control system comprising an oil burner, one or more electrically-operated oil-injecting devices for injecting oil into a combustion chamber of the oil burner, and switch means for periodically energizing the or each oil-injecting device, and switch-control means for varying the ON/OFF time ratio of the energization of the or each oil-injecting device.

Boiler control systems

An arrangement for supporting a vibratory atomizer for liquids, in which a nozzle for ejecting the liquid forms the end of a longitudinal passage in a decreasing-diameter resonant vibration-amplifier horn that extends from a body portion equipped with a generator for longitudinal vibrations, in a supporting structure with a minimum of interference with either the longitudinal vibrations or radial vibrations which accompany these longitudinal vibrations. The atomizer is clamped axially between two annular resilient support members one of which acts upon a flange-like shoulder surface of the atomizer perpendicular to the longitudinal vibration at the larger-diameter base of the amplifier horn and permits relatively unrestricted radial movement of the shoulder surface, while the other engages the horn surface in the vicinity of this plane along a line at which the horn surface intersects a nodal zone of zero radial vibration, where it acts to centralize the atomizer in addition to supporting it axially. Both annular supporting members may be formed as O-ring seals, and the space between the two O-ring seals may be utilized as a chamber through which liquid is supplied to the axial bore via a passage leading to that bore from the surface of the horn.

Vibratory atomizer

A fuel injection system comprising a vibrating fuel injector and a vibrating butterfly or sliding valve so positioned that it receives fuel from the injector and further vibrates it to further break it up.

Fuel injection system

Fuel injection apparatus comprising a fuel injector and a surface which can be vibrated, the apparatus being such that in operation the injector is vibrated to inject atomized fuel towards the surface which is also vibrated so that any particles of insufficiently atomized fuel can hit the vibrating surface and be further atomized.

Fuel injection apparatus

Apparatus for metering fuel and air for an engine, which apparatus comprises air flow measuring means which measures at least a part of the flow of air for the engine and which generates an electrical output that is proportional to the measured air flow, control means which receives the output from the air flow measuring means and which generates electrical output signals which vary in dependence upon the received signals, and an injector which injects fuel in response to the signals from the control means. Preferably the apparatus of the invention includes fuel dissipating means, such as a heat pipe or a sonic nozzle, for finely atomizing the injected fuel.

Apparatus for metering fuel and air for an engine

A fuel injection system comprising a fuel injection nozzle having a fuel injection orifice, and a vibrator for producing atomization of the fuel injected by the nozzle, the nozzle being equipped at the inlet side of the orifice with a fuel retaining valve which is arranged to normally close the orifice and thus prevent the injection of fuel by the nozzle and which is adapted to move away from the orifice when the vibrator is activated and thus allow the injection of fuel by the nozzle, the nozzle being provided with a mechanical stop device so positioned at a distance from the orifice and in the path of the valve as to limit the maximum possible travel of the valve away from the orifice to that giving a maximum predetermined amount of fuel injection by the system.

A heat exchanger for central heating in which water to be heated passes through a circular array of parallel tubes. Hot gas passes over the outside of the tubes and heats the water up. Metal wire interlaces the tubes and helps conduction heat from the gas to the water. Preferably the arrangement of tubes and wires is metal coated to further help the heat conduction.

Heat exchange apparatus

A vibratory atomizer for atomizing a liquid, the horn and piezoelectric crystal being housed in a housing but separated from the housing by a rubber O-ring so that energy loss to the housing is minimized.

A fuel injection nozzle arrangement comprising a fuel injection nozzle having a fuel injection orifice, and vibratory means such as a piezoelectric crystal for vibrating the nozzle to cause atomization of fuel ejected from the nozzle through the orifice, the nozzle having a fuel-retaining valve at the fuel inlet side of the orifice arranged to normally close the orifice and thus prevent the injection of fuel but to be opened when the vibratory means is energised to permit injection of fuel, and the nozzle having a gas-excluding valve at the fuel outlet side of the orifice arranged to normally close the orifice and thus prevent the entry of gases into the nozzle through the orifice but to open under fuel injection pressure to permit the injection of fuel.

Fuel injection nozzle arrangement

A vibratory fuel atomizer in which a small housing is located within the atomizer near the atomizer tip, the housing containing a ball valve for shutting off the flow of fuel and a spring for biasing the ball valve to the closed position.
