Surface features for device retention are disclosed herein, e.g., for retaining an access port within a patient during a surgical procedure. The surface features can prevent ejection of the access port from a body of a patient. The surface features can be positioned along the access port and configured to glide along body tissues with minimal friction so as not to hinder travel of the access port in an insertion direction. After insertion of the access port, the surface features can engage with surrounding tissue to increase friction therebetween and to prevent ejection of the access port from the patient. Deployment of the surface features can occur due to friction with the surrounding tissue and/or via activation of the surface features to protrude from the access port. The surface features can include teeth, hooks, scales, fins, bristles, braids, and/or threads for engaging tissue. The surface features can be disengaged from the tissue to enable withdrawal of the access port without damaging the surrounding tissue.

A surgical implant comprises an areal, flexible, mesh-like basic structure () including a knitted fabric made in gallon crotcheting technique, in which mesh pores () are formed from chains () made in closed pillar stitch. Adjacent chains (') are connected to each other, by at least one inlaying weft thread (), in sections forming a respective common side () of two adjacent mesh pores (&#x2032;). The inlaying weft thread (), in the region of said common side (), runs in at least three loop courses ().

In a method of manufacturing a surgical implant, a flexible areal basic structure having a first face and a second face is provided. At least one linear marking thread is placed, in a floating manner, onto one of the faces of the basic structure and mechanically fixed (e.g. by stitching) to the basic structure at a first location and at a second location which are spaced from each other. Thereafter, the linear marking thread is thermally fixed to the basic structure in an area between the first location and the second location by a melt-fusing process.

An areal implant comprises a flexible, porous basic structure which is non-resorbable or partly resorbable and which contains non-resorbable colored elements arranged in a stripe-like pattern. Furthermore, resorbable colored elements arranged in a stripe-like pattern are provided.

Areal implant

A surgical implant has a mesh-like base structure () and a film (). The film () extends over at least part of the base structure (), is connected to the base structure () in partial regions, and has a coefficient of kinetic friction, relative to rat skin, of not more than 0.25. The film () is preferably absorbable.

A composite implant includes an anisotropic surgical mesh having more stretchability along a first axis and less stretchability along a second axis that traverses the first axis, and an alignment marker overlying a first major surface of the anisotropic mesh and extending along the first axis. The implant includes a first absorbable, anti-adhesion film overlying the alignment marker and the first major surface of the anisotropic mesh, and a second absorbable, anti-adhesion film overlying the second major surface of the biocompatible mesh. The alignment marker is disposed between the first and second absorbable films and the first and second absorbable films are laminated to the anisotropic mesh.

A self-anchoring tissue lifting device for use with facial cosmetic reconstructive surgery includes an implant and a removable foil cover disposed on the implant. The implant includes an elongated mesh strip having a distal end on which is situated a tissue anchoring fleece material. Opposite lateral edges of the mesh material are preferably laser cut during the manufacturing process of the implant to provide a plurality of tissue engaging prickles along the longitudinal length of the implant. For treating the mid face and jowl, a stab incision is made within the hairline of the temple region of the patient and the device is applied from the temporal area to the peak of the ipsilateral cheek to capture the malar fat pad to correct midface abnormalities or the ptotic tissue causing the jowl.

Tissue repair implant

An areal implant has a long-term-stable, mesh-like basic structure which has pores of a size in the range from 1.5 mm to 8 mm and is provided, at least in a part area, on both sides with a synthetic, resorbable polymer film. The two polymer films are glued or welded together in pores of the basic structure.

An implant () has an areal basic structure made from weft-knitted or warp-knitted fabric which has a greater extendability in a central area () than in the peripheral area () of the implant (). The basic structure can be deformed in the central area () of the implant () to produce a projection () into the third dimension. The implant () preferably has a stiffening structure () in the area of the free end () of the projection (). The implant () is particularly suitable for treating hernias.

A reinforced areal implant particularly suitable to the repair of inguinal hernias has a net-type basic structure with a pore size of 1.5 mm to 4.0 mm and comprises textile strengthening elements, whose bending resistance, measured in a three-point flexibility test at a support length of 20 mm, is in the range 0.015 N/mm to 0.4 N/mm. The basic structure preferably contains a non-absorbable material and additionally an absorbable multi-filament yarn.
