A method and device to enable a medical or surgical procedure using electro-cautery on a patient with an implantable device in a cautery-safe mode of operation. In one embodiment, the invention provides an electronic implantable device programmer having a computer processor, and a display screen configured to display information based on signals from the computer processor. The programmer also includes an input device, and a wireless transmitter controlled by the computer processor. The programmer display and input give the operator the option of programming an implanted electronic device in a cautery-safe mode. With this input, from the operator, instructions are provided in the programmer to transmit a signal from the wireless transmission device to the implanted electronic device to program the electronic device to be in a dedicated bipolar mode where electrical noise produced when operating an electro-cautery device during and medical/surgical procedure does not interfere with operation of the electronic device.

Systems and methods for placing electronic devices into 'cautery-safe' mode

According to the invention, methods and devices for increasing cardiopulmonary circulation induced by chest compression and decompression when performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation are provided. Cardiopulmonary circulation is increased according to the invention by impeding airflow into a patient's lungs to enhance the extent and duration of negative intrathoracic pressure during decompression of the patient's chest. Enhanced extent and duration of negative of intrathoracic pressure thus promotes venous blood flow into the heart and lungs from the peripheral venous vasculature. In one embodiment, impeding the airflow into the patient's lungs is accomplished by placing a ventilation tube in the patient's airway.

Apparatus and methods for assisting cardiopulmonary resuscitation

According to the invention, methods and devices for increasing cardiopulmonary circulation induced by chest compression and decompression when performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation are provided. Cardiopulmonary circulation is increased according to the invention by impeding airflow into a patient's lungs to enhance the extent and duration of negative intrathoracic pressure during decompression of the patient's chest. Enhanced extent and duration of negative of intrathoracic pressure thus promotes venous blood flow into the heart and lungs from the peripheral venous vasculature. In one embodiment, impeding the airflow into the patient's lungs is accomplished by placing a ventilation tube in the patient's airway. The ventilation tube contains either a flow restrictive orifice disposed within or connected in series with a lumen of the ventilation tube, or a pressure-responsive valve within a lumen of the tube to impede the inflow of air. In a preferred embodiment, the patient's mouth and nose are covered with a facial mask which can impede airflow into the patient's airway. Also provided is an improved endotracheal tube to allow air to be impeded from flowing to the patient's lungs during decompression. Another apparatus according to the invention provides for an improved air-delivery system comprising a compressible structure which has been modified to allow for the impedance of the flow of gases to the patient's lungs. Also, the compressible structure is interfaced with the patient, preferably by attaching a facial mask or an endotracheal to the structure.

Methods and pharmaceutical compositions for resuscitating patients suffering from cardiac arrest are disclosed. The methods comprise the performance of cardiopulmonary resuscitation techniques which result in active inducement of venous blood transport into the heart and arterial blood transport from the heart. During the performance of such techniques, the patient is administered with an amount of an arterial constrictor sufficient to increase arterial blood pressure and with an amount of a venodilator sufficient to enhance arterial blood flow to the brain and heart. Pharmaceutical compositions comprise both the arterial constrictor and venodilator present in a single formulation. The methods are found to both enhance patient survival and reduce heart and brain damage.
