A multi-line telephony system and method deliver multiple concurrent telephone conversations to a customer premise via a single traditional twisted-pair communications connection, and support telephone services via a traditional dial-up connection. Improved packet-based communications are performed using the multi-line telephony system and method with better transmission characteristics, such as transmission speed, over traditional twisted-pair wire connections to provide H.323-based network

Multi-line telephony via network gateways

A multi-party conferencing method and system determine which participants are currently speaking and send a speaker identification message to the terminals used by the participants in the conference. The terminals then display the speaker's identity on a display screen. When more than one participant is speaking at the same moment in time, the system analyzes the audio streams from the terminals and identifies a terminal associated with a dominant party. When multiple participants are using the terminal associated with the dominant party, the system identifies the speaking participant within the dominant party based on an indication received from the speaker. In one embodiment, the invention is implemented in an H.323 Internet telephony environment.

Speaker identifier for multi-party conference

A method and apparatus are implemented for providing traditional telecommunications service capabilities in a packet based computer network. The system and method of the present invention automatically provide such service capabilities in the event a terminal end-point is unavailable to receive an incoming call, based upon predetermined associations between the terminal end-point and one or more of the available services.
