The method of the present invention provides a means for protecting a patient, including a transplant patient, from reperfusion injury by administering CM101 or GBS toxin isolated from Group B &bgr;-hemolytic Streptococcus bacteria. The present invention also includes a method to protect a tissue or organ against reperfusion injury in a transplant patient.

Facilitation of wound healing with CM101/GBS toxin

The present invention includes a means of treating a patient having a keloid. Specifically, the invention includes a method for excising the keloid and administering a GBS toxin isolated from Group B &bgr;-hemolytic Streptococcus bacteria.

Facilitation of keloid healing with CM101/GBS toxin

Neural injury may be advantageously treated with CM101, a polysaccharide toxin isolated from Group B &bgr;-hemolytic Streptococcus bacteria. CM1O1 treatment aids in the re-establishment of neuronal connectivity, at least partially inhibits scar formation, and increases the probability of survival during the critical period following injury to the central nervous system. Preexisting neural injuries having scar tissue are ameliorated by surgical excision of the scar tissue in conjunction with administration of CM101.

Facilitation of repair of neural injury with CM101/GBS toxin

A method of treating a chronic inflammatory disease such as rheumatoid arthritis or psoriasis includes treating a patient with a toxin derived from Group B &bgr;-hemolytic Streptococcus bacteria. The purified GBS toxin, or CM101, may be administered. intravenously to the patient in repeated doses.

Treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases with CM101/GBS toxin

A method of treating a chronic inflammatory disease such as rheumatoid arthritis or psoriasis includes treating a patient with a toxin derived from Group B .beta.-hemolytic Streptococcus bacteria. The purified GBS toxin, or CM101, may be administered intravenously to the patient in repeated doses.

Neural injury of the type resulting from trauma or surgery may be advantageously treated with a polysaccharide toxin derived from Group B .beta.-hemolytic Streptococcus (GBS) bacteria. Additionally, diseases characterized by neuronal degeneration or impairment of neuronal connectivity, such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and multiple sclerosis may be treated with the GBS toxin. The GBS toxin is administered to the patient before, during, or after infliction of the neural injury and acts by minimizing gliosis and promoting the reestablishment of neuronal connectivity.

The method of the present invention provides a means of treating a patient having a wound, especially by minimizing scarring and accelerating wound healing, by administering CM101 or GBS toxin isolated from Group B .beta.-hemolytic streptococcus bacteria. The method of the present invention also includes administration of CM101 or GBS toxin to surgery patients having tumors in order to facilitate wound healing and minimize the likelihood of tumor progression.
