A selective adhesive mechanism comprises an engineered surface structure or substrate and a compliant member. The compliant member is able to be a dry and non-tacky substance. The compliant member is selectively adhesive to the engineered surface when the compliant member is in contact with the engineered surface. The compliant member shows adhesion to the engineered surface when the compliant member is within a pre-selected range of hardness. In some embodiments, the compliant member comprises a polymeric member, a thermoplastic elastomer, silicone, polyurethane, or a combination thereof.

A hair band comprises a stretchable body and a center hole. The center hole increases in diameter when the hair band is moved from a rest position to a stretched position. A distance between an outer edge of the body and an outer edge of the center hole is greater than the center hole diameter when the hair band is in a rest position. The distance between the outer edge of the center hole and the outer edge of the body decreases and the inner diameter increases as the hair band is stretched. In some embodiments, the body is hollow and filled with one or more of a gel substance, a granular solid, and a viscous liquid. In some embodiments, the hair band is manufactured by one or more of an extrusion molding process and an injection molding process.

This invention is a system and a method for styling hair and parting hair according to a predetermined pattern. The invention utilizes a stencil that has a patterned edge. Preferably, the stencil is a flattened elongated stencil device that is formed from a resilient material, such as plastic polyurethane or rubber, and is capable of conforming to the curvature of a human head. In operation the stencil device is placed over the area of hair to be styled and the patterned edge of the stencil device is traced through the hair with a parting device. The hair is then separated along the trace with the parting device to created a hair style with a part patterned substantially similar the patterned edge of the stencil device used. The parting device preferably has a tip portion for tracing the part through the hair and a handle portion for separating the hair. Preferably, the handle portion of the parting device has two movable handles that are hingably attached to the tip portion and which open and close in a 'jaw-like' fashion. Accordingly, the tip portion is moved through the hair near the scalp while tracing along the patterned edge of the stencil device. The handles are preferably in the closed position and with the tip portion pointing in a forward tracing direction. While tracing the tip through the hair, the hair flows over the handles and collects on the handles. After the tracing is complete, the hair is separated by lifting the parting device through the hair with the handles in the open position. Alternatively, the parting device has a tip portion and a flared body portion. Accordingly, the hair is separated as a result of the hair flowing from the tip portion over the flared handle as the tip section is traced through the hair.

The current invention is for a device, a method and a system for styling hair. The preferred device of the instant invention is a hair pin that spirals with two or more rotations from a larger bottom section with a pointed end to a smaller top section with a blunted or enlarged end. The hair pin is preferably elongated and forms a substantially uniform cone shape with an inner spiral region. In the preferred method of the invention, a portion of hair is secured within the inner spiral region of the hair pin by placing the tapered or pointed end of the spiral hair pin into a section of hair and twisting the hair pin in a direction opposite to the spiraling direction of the hair pin, such that the hair pin passes through the hair at least twice and captures or gathers the portion hair within the inner spiral region. In the system of the invention, a first spiral hair pin is used in conjunction one more additional hair pins, whereby the one or more additional hair pins are threaded through hair and between one or more spirals of the first hair pin.

The device of the current invention is a multi-layer clip that is preferably configured for securing hair. The clip has at least three body sections and preferably four body sections. Body sections are configured to be coupled with adjacent body sections through hinges, whereby the body sections collectively open in a zig-zag fashion. Preferably, the clip is secured with the body sections in a layered and closed position through two-part snap features, wherein portions of the interlocking snap features are located on adjacent surfaces of adjacent body sections. Preferably, lengths of the body sections are sequentially altered such that body sections collectively close in a layered and cascaded fashion. Adjacent surfaces between adjacent body sections are preferably provided with protruding teeth structures to facilitate the securing of hair.

A barrette structure comprises at least two body sections are attached by their ends through hinge elements. Preferably, a first body section is a semi-rigid bowed structure with an interior concave surface and an exterior convex surface. A second body section is a flexible strip spring member that capable of bowing inward toward the interior concave surface of the first body section with the device in a closed position and outward away from the interior concave surface of the first body section with the device in the open position. With the device in the open position, a section of hair is placed through the opening formed by the first and second body section. The first and second body sections are presses together causing the second body section snap to the closed position securing the section of hair. In accordance with embodiments of the invention, the device is equipped with gripping features which facilitate holding the section of hair between the first and second body section. In further embodiments, the body sections are decorate or colored to have any suitable appearance.

This invention is a device for parting hair into a preferred style. The device has an extended point that is preferably a solid point and two handles that each hinge about the point such that the handles open and close in a jaw like fashion. The handles are preferably flattened elongated handles that are larger at the holding ends for easy operation and handling of the device. The tip is also preferably flattened and substantially co-planar with the handles or positioned at an angled of 45 degree or less relative to the plane of the flattened handles. In an alternative embodiment of the invention, the handles section are connected together by a single hinge near or at the tip section of the device. Hair is parted into the preferred configuration by tracing the tip of the device through a section of hair with the handles in the closed position such that the hair flows over the handles and accumulates on the handles. The handles are then opened thus separating the hair and forming the part. The device may be used for making any number of parting configurations with hair and is particularly useful for making irregular and zig-zag parting configuration with hair. The device is monolithic and made from a resilient material or is made in parts which may be configured to disassemble. In other embodiments of the invention, the device is equipped with a lock to hold the device in a closed position and with a spring between the handles for urging the handles to open and making the device easy to operate with one hand.

Device for styling hair

A hair styling device and method utilizes a spring strip having a stable open state and a coiled closed state. In the open state the strip is elongated and is capable of being positioned against, through, or around sections of hair. The strip is then actuated to coil and hold the sections of hair in styles. In preferred embodiments, the device comprises a carbon steel spring strip and a holding member for holding a section of hair against the spring strip during styling. The preferred device is capable to generate a variety of hairstyles through the coiling action of the spring strip or spring strips used. In one embodiment the device comprises two spring strips attached to each other at one end and coated with a material having a textured surface to prevent hair from slipping. In another embodiment a spring strip has a stretchable section attached at the ends of a spring strip for holding a section of hair against the spring strip during styling. Alternatively, a plurality of spring strips are connected through a body structure such that the spring strips coil in the same direction and act together as a claw or clamping device to hold sections of hair. Thin elongated coiling hair sticks and spring strips used in combination with elastic loops are also described.

Flip clip hair styling apparatus and methods

A hair styling article comprises a spring strip having an open state and a closed state. In the open state the strip has a linear shape and high energy, while in the closed state it has a coiled shape and a low energy. The article also comprises a second strip which is flexible and approximately equal in length to the spring strip. The second strip is preferably a spring strip also. A method of styling hair using the article comprises placing a portion of the hair between the two strips while the strips are in their open states and then coiling them such that they release energy and enter low energy states corresponding to a coiled shape. In a preferred embodiment, the article comprises two strips of carbon spring steel flexibly attached to each other at one end and coated with a material having a textured surface to help prevent hair from slipping.
