A method of enabling a client connected to a foreign computer network to utilize various network resources within the foreign computer network. Wherein, the client may not possess the various applications and drivers typically needed to operate the network resources. For example, a personal digital assistant (PDA) could wirelessly connect to an Ethernet network and print a document located on the internet without downloading the specific printer driver or the application with which to open the document.

Network based software agent to allow dynamic resource access

A system for providing security in a computing network. The system has a server for distributing policies to be implemented by firewall devices in the network. The firewall devices provide hardware implemented firewalls to communication devices making network connections. The system has logic to allow a connection to be made to the network via a communication device at a node provided the firewall device is at that node. Therefore, the firewall device must be in the system for a connection to be established via the communication device. Additionally, the system is configured to cause data transferred by the communication device to be processed by the firewall.

System for providing firewall capabilities to a communication device

A method for predicting the compression rate of a particular compression algorithm upon a data stream before applying the compression algorithm to the data stream. The method utilizes a predefined threshold value and an estimated compression rate to determine whether the data stream should be compressed. If the estimated compression rate is below the threshold value, the compression algorithm will not be applied to the data stream. If the estimated compression rate is above the threshold, the compression algorithm will be applied. For example, if a series of data streams are transmitted over a wireless connection, the claimed method will determine which data streams can be successfully compressed and which data streams have already been compressed.

Systems and methods for compressing data

A method for selecting and configuring a network resource, out of a plurality of network resources, for use with a computer system client. The method includes the step of determining what network resources reside within a network. The respective attributes of the network resources are then assessed. A determination is then made as to which of the network resources best corresponds to a desired attribute. Configuration software for the best corresponding network resource is then installed on the client and the best corresponding network resource is prepared for use by the client. The installation of configuration software can include installing a driver for the best corresponding network resource. A map showing a location of the best corresponding network resource with respect to the client can be accessed. The determination of which of the network resources best corresponds to the desired attribute can be dynamically updated as a location of the client changes.

Method and system for automatic network resource selection and configuration in a network environment

A method for switching between an individual computer's network interface technologies without interrupting any pending data transmissions on the existing network connection. The method include detecting when an existing network connection is no longer connected and if there are any available network connections on different network interface technologies. In addition, the method determines the address of the new connection and reassociates all existing data flow with the new network connection. Data is then routed to the new network connection whether it is on the same subnet or a different subnet.

Method to enable continuous mobility across wired and wireless network interfaces

A system for protecting data stored on a device. The system has a server for assigning encryption/decryption keys and one or more peripheral devices. The peripheral devices have a network interface to connect to the server to receive the keys, a host interface to couple to host devices, and an encryption/decryption engine for processing files transferred between the host devices and the peripheral devices. In this fashion, the peripheral devices use the keys to encrypt and decrypt data stored on the host devices.

Method and apparatus for seamless mobility with layer two assistance

The present invention includes a method and device to support hand off of a session between a mobile terminal and a server, while continuing the session. One aspect of the invention is a method involving a first entity having an IP stack and a second entity having an IP stack. These entities support a hand off from one access technology to another, wherein the different access technologies are differentiated by a characteristic such as their physical layer. Particular aspects of the present invention are described in the claims, specification and drawings.
