Electronic devices, electronic modules, and methods for manufacturing electronic devices and/or electronic modules are described herein. Some embodiments of the present invention may be directed to an electronic module that includes a multi-chip module (MCM) substrate having a first surface configured to be connected to a system printed circuit board and a second surface defining a central portion and a peripheral portion. The electronic module may include a main die positioned on the central portion of the second surface of the MCM substrate and in electrical communication with electrical traces of the MCM substrate. The electronic module may include MCM sockets positioned on the peripheral portion of the MCM substrate, where each MCM socket is configured to engage and support a mezzanine package substrate such that a main portion of the mezzanine package substrate extends beyond the peripheral portion of the MCM substrate.

A head mounted display system can include a camera, at least one waveguide, at least one coupling optical element that is configured such that light is coupled into the waveguide(s) and guided therein, and at least one out-coupling element. The at least one out-coupling element can be configured to couple light that is guided within the waveguide(s) out of the waveguide(s) and direct the light to the camera. The at least one coupling element may include a diffractive optical element having optical power. Additionally or alternatively, the at least one coupling optical element may have a coupling area, for coupling light into the waveguide(s), the coupling area having an average thickness in a range from 0.1 to 3 millimeters across and/or may have a pinhole sized and/or slit shaped coupling area.

Head mounted display systems configured to project light to an eye of a user to display augmented reality image content in a vision field of the user are disclosed. In embodiments, the system includes a frame configured to be supported on a head of the user, an image projector configured to project images into the user's eye, a camera coupled to the frame, a waveguide optically coupled to the camera, an optical coupling optical element me, an out-coupling element configured to direct light emitted from the waveguide to the camera, and a first light source configured to direct light to the user's eye through the waveguide. Electronics control the camera to capture images periodically and farther control the first light source to pulse in time with the camera such that light emitted by the light source has a reduced intensity when the camera is not capturing images.

Augmented reality display with waveguide configured to capture images of eye and/or environment

A wafer includes a semiconductor substrate, multiple photonics devices and a test coupler. The multiple photonics devices are fabricated on the substrate and have multiple respective ports. The test coupler is disposed on the wafer and is configured to couple an optical test signal between a tester and the multiple ports of the multiple photonics devices during testing of the photonics devices.

A method for providing a composite field of view includes providing two or more input light beams to a scanning mirror and scanning the two or more input light beams using the scanning mirror to provide a plurality of reflected light beams at different angles. Each of the plurality of reflected light beams is configured to provide an image in a respective field of view. The method also includes receiving the plurality of reflected light beams in a waveguide and projecting a plurality of output light beams from the waveguide to form a projected image in the composite field of view. The composite field of view is larger than the respective field of view provided by each of the two or more input light beams.

Method and system for large field of view display with scanning reflector

Various embodiments of silicon photonic (SiP) chips are provided that are configured for backside or frontside optical fiber coupling. An SiP chip includes a photonic integrated circuit formed on a first surface of a first substrate. The photonic integrated circuit includes at least one optical component and at least one coupling element. The at least one optical component is configured to propagate an optical signal therethrough in a waveguide propagation direction that is substantially parallel to a plane defined by the first surface. The at least one coupling element is configured to couple an optical signal propagating along an optical path transverse to the waveguide propagation direction into the at least one optical component to enable the backside or frontside coupling of an optical fiber to the SiP chip.

A substrate testing device includes a first testing component configured to couple to electrical pads of a substrate and perform electrical testing on one or more dies of the substrate during a test. The substrate testing device includes a second testing component configured to perform optical testing of the one or more dies during the test. The substrate testing device further includes a third testing component comprising a three-dimensional scanner configured to perform a dimensional scan of the one or more dies of the substrate, wherein the third testing component is to perform geometrical testing on the one or more dies during the test.

A method of performing localization of a handheld device with respect to a wearable device includes capturing, by a first imaging device mounted to the handheld device, a fiducial image containing a number of fiducials affixed to the wearable device and capturing, by a second imaging device mounted to the handheld device, a world image containing one or more features surrounding the handheld device. The method also includes obtaining, by a sensor mounted to the handheld device, handheld data indicative of movement of the handheld device, determining the number of fiducials contained in the fiducial image, and updating a position and an orientation of the handheld device using at least one of the fiducial image or the world image and the handheld data.

Augmented reality glasses can include a first laser, a second laser, and a scanning mirror. The augmented reality glasses can also include a first polarization selective reflector and a second polarization selective reflector. The first polarization selective reflector is arranged to receive light from the first laser and reflect light received from the first laser at a first angle to the scanning mirror, and the second polarization selective reflector is arranged to receive light from the second laser and reflect light received from the second laser at a second angle to the scanning mirror. The augmented reality glasses can also have an eyepiece having an input coupling port arranged to receive light reflected by the scanning mirror.

A head mounted display system can include a camera, at least one waveguide, at least one coupling optical element that is configured such that light is coupled into said waveguide and guided therein, and at least one out-coupling element. A head mounted display system configured to project light to an eye of a user to display augmented reality images can include a frame configured to be supported on a head of the user, a camera disposed temporally on said frame, an eyepiece configured to direct light into said user's eye to display augmented reality image content to the user's vision field, a reflective element disposed on the frame, and at least one VCSEL disposed to illuminate said eye, wherein the camera is disposed with respect to the reflective element such that light from the VCSEL is reflected from the user's eye to the reflective element and is reflected from the reflective element to the camera to form images of the eye that are captured by the camera.

Augmented reality headgear includes transparent displays that allow a user to simultaneously view the real world and virtual content positioned in the real world and further includes at least one source of coherent light and at least one sensor array for sensing, at a series of times, speckle patterns produced when the coherent light impinges environment surfaces. Circuitry is provided for sensing shifts in the speckle pattern and determining motion which caused the shift of the speckle pattern and adjusting the display of virtual objects displayed by the augmented reality headgear to compensate for the motion.
