The Invention refers to an airborne ultrasound testing system for a test object () containing an ultrasound generator () and an ultrasound receiver () and a control to control both and a computer assisted test result interface to display an image of the tested test object (). The ultrasound generator () is a resonance-free thermo-acoustic ultrasound generator which does not rely on mechanically deformable or oscillating parts and the ultrasound receiver () is a membrane-free and resonance-free optical microphone in an air or gas coupled pulse echo arrangement or in an air or gas coupled transmission mode arrangement. With this testing system, it is possible to test objects with high precision and without liquids and disturbing ringing effects.

Airborne ultrasound testing system for a test object

Transducers and methods for converting acoustic signals into electrical signals. A device () includes an interferometer () including two mirrors () adapted for reflecting electromagnetic radiation () coupled into a space () between the mirrors (). The acoustic signal () is to be coupled into the space () for influencing the electromagnetic radiation () in accordance with this acoustic signal. An electromagnetic radiation detector () is adapted for detecting the influenced electromagnetic radiation () and for converting the detected influenced electromagnetic radiation () into the electric signal () being indicative for the acoustic signal (). An operation point stabilization unit stabilizes an operation point of the device ().

Transducer system

A device comprising measurement () and reference () interferometers is disclosed. Each interferometer is configured to receive light from the same light source () and to emit light to respective detectors () and has a respective operating point. The measurement interferometer () is configured to respond to variations in a physical parameter by varying the intensity of light emitted, whereas the reference interferometer () is configured to be unresponsive to variations in the physical parameter. The device further comprises a signal processor for generating a differential output signal depending on respective output signals generated by the detectors ().

Optical sensor

An acoustoelectric transducer comprising a laser source A and a light receiver H, wherein a soundfield S is provided by which the propagation velocity of the laser beam may be modulated according to the sound pressure while it traverses the soundfield S.
