An apparatus and method for providing Unicode support in legacy operating systems are provided. With the apparatus and method, a focus hook module, keyboard hook module, and keystroke conversion module are registered with the legacy operating system. The focus hook module determines the currently active application and whether the currently active application is Unicode capable. The keyboard hook module receives keyboard events from an input interface and sends those keyboard events to the keystroke conversion module. The keystroke conversion module converts the keyboard events into Unicode characters which are sent back to the keyboard hook module. The keyboard hook module then stores the Unicode characters in a temporary storage memory, e.g., the clipboard. The keyboard hook module then sends a command to the application to paste the contents of the temporary storage memory to the currently active application.

Enabling unicode input in legacy operating systems

The present invention provides redirection for a web page request for an old URL received at a web server. In an embodiment, a web page request from an end-user is redirected to a Common Gateway Interface ('CGI') script for handling the web page redirection. In an embodiment, the CGI script includes a routine for matching an old URL to a new URL provided in a lookup table. In an embodiment, each web page of an old URL has a corresponding new URL such that an end-user trying to access a web page using an old URL is always directed to a corresponding new web page, or to a relevant page if a corresponding new page does not exist. In another embodiment, a customized message may be associated with a match between an old URL and a new URL, and the customized message may be displayed prior to redirection.

Targeted web page redirection

A method for creating a specific POSIX style locale source file, on demand, suitable for compilation in a computer is provided the method comprising, receiving a request submitted for the specific POSIX style locale, and obtaining a plurality of localization values related to the specific POSIX style locale. Next, determining a category within the plurality of localization values and selecting process routines dependent upon the category, and then selectively extracting the category information. After extracting the category information is stored into a memory of the computer. A determination is made regarding more categories to process, which might result in processing the remaining categories, otherwise assembling the extracted information into the POSIX style locale source file. Assembling may entail addition of no files or files such as LC-CTYPE and LC_COLLATE to form a locale source suitable for compilation.

On-demand creation of POSIX locale source

The invention relates to access to a platform independent input method editor or IME from an underlying operating system. Keystrokes received at an operating system input may be formed into a character sequence, and an operating system-based IME service module may call the platform independent IME to convert the character sequence to a corresponding code point. The transferred code point may then be returned to an operating system output.

Accessing a platform independent input method editor from an underlying operating system

A method, apparatus, and computer program product in a data processing system for intelligent resource provisioning based on on-demand weight calculation. Resource weights are defined for an application cluster. If the application cluster requests a set of additional resources, an on-demand weight for each resource in a resource pool is calculated and the resource with the highest on-demand weight is provisioned for the requesting application cluster. If resources need to be de-provisioned from the application cluster, an on-demand weight for each resource in the application cluster is calculated and the resource with the lowest on-demand weight for the application cluster is de-provisioned.

Intelligent resource provisioning based on on-demand weight calculation

A computer implemented method for preparing a plurality of stream oriented locale files for verification is provided. In an embodiment there is a method comprising obtaining at least one of the plurality of stream oriented locale files as input, determining more than one of a plurality of stream oriented locale files, merging the plurality of stream oriented locale files into a stream oriented locale file, otherwise; locating a respective portion of the stream oriented locale file, creating an output portion from the respective portion by selectively invoking a process based on the respective portion, storing the output portion in a memory and formatting the output portion, stored in the memory, into a formatted string. The formatted string may then be viewed by a user verifier or programmatically verified using reference strings. This form of verification is performed using typical system utilities and scripting services.

Verification of stream oriented locale files

The invention provides for extracting language and culture information from a POSIX&#x2122;* conforming locale source file for the purpose of formatting sample data for country and language expert validation. The invention is performed on a computer system by obtaining a locale source file, in a preferred form, containing a plurality of elements having language and culture information, extracting and then using those elements and their associated values cooperatively with sample data, to generate readable text representations, thereby providing a country and language expert reviewer with textual data formatted according to the conventions embodied in the locale source file. The invention provides representative results without requiring compilation of a locale object, thereby increasing the dfficiency of validation efforts.

Validating content of localization data files

A computer system and object-oriented method and class for use with the computer system to convert data in Unicode format back and forth to data having a fixed-length format, such as EBCDIC, and to allow editing of the data and return the edited data back to its original format without loss of bytes. Conversely, the method, class, and computer system also allow the downloading of data in a fixed-length format into a Unicode environment, the fixed-length format is converted into an editable form and then reconverted back into the fixed-length format without loss of bytes. The method accommodates UTF-UTF-and UTF-Once the fixed-length of the data has been determined, a byte array is created and an attribute indicating whether a character is a single byte character or a double-byte character is assigned to each byte in the array. The array and subset arrays representative of fixed-length fields within the fixed-length statements may then be truncated, and/or repaired at either or both the beginning and the end, and/or right- or left-aligned to realize a version of the data that can be displayed and edited without loss of bytes. Once edited, using the assigned attributes, the byte array can be converted to code having the fixed-length format or can be translated back to Unicode.

Processing fixed-format data in a unicode environment

The invention relates to culturally sensitive sorting of records. The invention provides a method and a computer system for sorting a set of keyed records based on a preferred locale specification having collation information of a culture. The method is performed on a computer system operatively coupled to a computer readable memory storing the set of keyed records. The steps include reading a locale token associated with the set of records, the locale token identifying a preferred locale object having collation information, using the preferred locale object to locate and read the collation information, creating a culturally correct collation key for each data key associated with the each record, and using the created culturally correct collation keys to sort the set of records into a culturally correct sorted order.

Culturally correct ordering of keyed records

A locale identification triplet is provided and a related computer implemented method, computer system and computer program for making practical use of the locale identification triplet. The identifier includes a table identifier, locale version identifier and a locale token. The locale token is the only mandatory identifier in the triplet and addresses the need to uniquely identify desired localization specifications through a concise unambiguous hexadecimal format. The locale version identifier addresses the need to allow multiple variations of the locale specification defined for a given 'root' locale, and the table identifier addresses the need to provide a mechanism to identify and distinguish a particular instance of a locale with regards to an environment (such as a system) or reference to an installation/application/user provided reference table.

Transmission of locale information

A method and apparatus for optical character recognition particularly suitable for cursive and scripted text in one or more of several languages follows the tracings of the script and encodes them as a sequence of directional vectors. It reads a preprocessed word or sub-word of interconnected characters as a unit and the characters are accepted in a specific language only if all characters in a unit have been recognized by testing against a first set of language-specific rules without leaving a remainder of any vectors in the unit. If there are vectors remaining unused, it moves a character marker to utilize more or fewer vectors for the current sub-word in order to obtain recognition. If the vectors do not form a character in a first language, the invention consults a second set of language-specific rules and follows similar steps to obtain recognition of one or more characters against the second set of language-specific rules. Also disclosed is a computer-usable medium, for example a magnetic or optical storage diskette, containing code means to execute the invention.

Optical character recognition of handwritten or cursive text in multiple languages

A computer system is described that is capable of transmitting and displaying files containing variable locale selectors, that is, language, territory and coded character set identifiers. The system contains a code that is transmitted as part of the files, and includes information defining the language and the territory, which are alphanumeric variables normally encoded in binary format, and the coded character set, which is normally encoded as a numeric decimal format. The discrete values of known combinations of these codes are listed, preferably in a lookup table, and each known set of coded values is given a unique hexadecimal value. The hexadecimal value is retained with the subject file and used by a user interface adapter to display the information in the file according to the desired set of locale selectors.

Encoding of language, country and character formats for multiple

A method and system for generating event information in a distributed computing environment. An event information packet is passed between the client system and the server system in a remote procedure call. Event information, such as trace data, is gathered in the event packet during execution of the remote procedure, and the event packet is passed back to the calling system when the procedure returns. The information in the event packet is made available for use by a program, such as a debugging utility or other application, running in the address space of the client system.
