A specific mixture of polyols, at least one of which contains the transesterification product of the polymer polylactic acid with natural oils. The mixture of polyols can be used as one component of a two-component adhesive for laminating flexible packaging. The other component comprises an isocyanate-functionalized compound. The two components are combined before use and the resulting adhesive can be used to bond films to form a flexible packaging material.

Laminating adhesives using polyester from transesterification of polylactic acid with natural oils

Disclosed is a transesterified polylactic acid product which has been transesterified with a diol and at least one natural oil. The transesterified polylactic acid product has surprisingly improved properties compared to unmodified polylactic acid including: a liquid state at room temperature, a reduced melting temperature and increased solubility in a variety of solvents. Also disclosed is a method for producing the transesterified polylactic acid product. The transesterified polylactic acid product is economical to produce and includes a high content of renewable resources. In addition, the product is biodegradable.

Transesterification of polylactic acid with natural oils

A radiation-curable laminating adhesive is provided which contains a) at least one urethane (meth)acrylate oligomer and b) at least one additional (meth)acrylate-functionalized component selected from the group consisting of carboxylic acid-functionalized ester-containing (meth)acrylate monomers and polybutadiene poly(meth)acrylates. The adhesive may also contain other components such as (meth)acrylic polyol (meth)acrylates. Flexible packaging laminates may be obtained by using the aforedescribed adhesive to adhere thin polymeric and/or metallic films together, the adhesive being exposed to an amount of radiation effective to cure the adhesive.

Radiation-curable laminating adhesives

A robust, two component adhesive for laminating flexible packaging material comprising a mixture of Component A and Component B. Component A comprises an isocyanate-functionalized compound. Component B comprises a mixture of a high functionality polyol containing at least four hydroxyl groups per molecule with at least two primary OH groups on the molecule and two secondary OH groups on the molecule and a trifunctional polyol containing three OH groups on the molecule. Component B can contain a difunctional polyol containing two OH groups on the molecule. The adhesive is robust and retains desirable properties when used at varying A:B mix ratios better than conventional laminating adhesives used at the same mix ratios.

Robust adhesives for laminating flexible packaging material

Adhesive compositions useful for laminating cellulosic substrates are formulated using an aqueous emulsion of a vinyl ester polymer such as polyvinyl acetate, one or more monomers or oligomers functionalized with (meth)acrylate groups, and a photoinitiator. The adhesive is cured by drying and exposing the adhesive to UV or visible light and is particularly useful for attaching clear films to cellulosic substrates such as paper and boxboard (e.g., in the manufacture of envelopes or folding cartons having windows).

Dual cure adhesives

Waterborne polyurethanes possessing urea-urethane linkages that are not separated by any intervening carbon atoms may be obtained by using hydroxylamine as a chain extender. Isocyanate-terminated prepolymer possessing ionized or easily ionizable groups is reacted with NH.sub.2 OH to form a polyurethane possessing urea-urethane linkages corresponding to the formula: ##STR1## The waterborne polyurethanes are useful in adhesive, coating and ink formulations and in the flexible package industry.
