A system and method is disclosed for selectively masking or revealing an availability of mobile voice and data services associated with a mobile device when a handoff frequency from data capable to data-limited networks exceeds a threshold. The system can include components that can detect a network handoff event, compute a handoff frequency and compare the handoff frequency to a threshold. Additional components can mask availability of voice and data services at mobile device based on the comparison. Also disclosed is a method for determining a mobile device location, mapping RF signal quality of data capable networks surrounding the location, and indicating an impending loss of service if the RF signal quality falls below a quality threshold.

Intelligent algorithm to determine service availability and presentation to user

A programmable intelligent activation module to intelligently allow access to GPS resources is provided. In accordance with pre-programmed settings, an intelligent activation module will control the frequency by which a GPS module is allowed to access a GPS or GSM network in order to acquire location information of a mobile device equipped with GPS equipment. By controlling access to a GPS or GSM network, network resources such as bandwidth are conserved unless actually needed as is determined by the intelligent activation module. Similarly, battery resources for the mobile device are also conserved in that unnecessary activation of the GPS module is prevented until such activation is actually needed. The intelligent activation module can be programmed with a variety of settings including speed, map deltas, final destination information, or settings as pre-determined by a user of the mobile device.

Intelligent utilization of resources in mobile devices

A programmable intelligent activation module to intelligently allow access to GPS resources is provided. Systems and methods for communicating support or absence of support of a plurality of protocol features are disclosed. Generally, a plurality of bits is received, each individual bit indicating support or absence of support of a different protocol features. The received plurality of bits are analyzed to determine which protocol features are supported by a first telecommunications station.

Intelligent utilization of battery and bandwidth resources in mobile devices

A protocol feature communication method and system is disclosed. The method defines a bit stream identifying each feature of a protocol version. Each bit of the bit stream is set in either a first logic state indicating support of the corresponding protocol feature or a second logic state indicating an absence of a support of the corresponding protocol feature. The bit stream is stored within a mobile station. The system comprises the mobile station and base station. The mobile station is operable to transmit the bit stream to the base station and the base station is operable to determine each protocol feature supported by the mobile station by identifying each bit of the bit stream that is set in the first logic state.
