Outcome-based adjustment of a software-defined environment (SDE) includes determining a business operation and a corresponding set of tasks to be performed in a software defined environment (SDE), establishing a first resource configuration to perform the corresponding set of tasks to achieve a business outcome target, determining a first resource cost for performing the corresponding set of tasks, assigning a priority level to tasks within the corresponding set of tasks, determining a set of performance indicators corresponding to a task having a first priority level, monitoring the SDE to identify a triggering event, responsive to identifying the triggering event, establishing a second resource configuration based, at least in part, on a performance level of a performance indicator in the set of performance indicators, the second resource configuration addressing the triggering event, and determining a second resource cost for performing the corresponding set of tasks according to the second resource configuration.

Outcome-based software-defined infrastructure

A method and system for outcome-based adjustment of a software-defined environment (SDE) that includes establishing a link between a business outcome and a first resource configuration from software defined environment, establishing a monitoring mechanism for continuously measuring a current state of the SDE, using a behavior model of the SDE to anticipate, or forecast, a triggering event, and responsive to the forecast of a triggering event, using the behavior model to determine a second resource configuration to achieve the business outcome. The link includes at least one of a utility of services for the business outcome, a cost of a set of resources consumed by the first resource configuration, and a risk of the set of resources becoming unavailable.

There is a method and system for capability-based resource allocation in a software-defined environment that performs the following steps (not necessarily in the following order): (i) determining a set of capability characteristics for a plurality of workload resources within a software-defined environment; (ii) determining a set of workload components for a specified workload; and (iii) identifying a set of workload resources from the plurality of workload resources to allocate to the specified workload based, at least in part, on the set of capability characteristics corresponding to each workload within the set of workload resources. A workload component of the set of workload components has a unique set of workload characteristics.

Capability-based abstraction of software-defined infrastructure

Systems, methods and computer program products manage computing resources for a system. A system includes a set of processors having multiple processor cores present in the computer system, where the processor cores form an aggregated set of processor cores for the system. A dependency analyzer determines dependencies among a set of workload components executing on the set of processor cores. A policy includes rules associated with managing one or more of power consumption, heat production, operating cost or workload balancing for the set of aggregated processor cores. In response to a workload event, a management component sets a state of one or more of the processor cores in accordance with the workload event, the policy and the set of dependencies.

The present invention discloses a solution for managing policy artifacts using a configuration management database (CMDB). Policies can be associated with a number of information technology resources, such as servers, businesses applications and the like. The solution permits automatic tagging of the policies (auto-discovery) as they enter the CMDB. For example, when a policy is added, it can be compared against a set of tagging rules. Multiple rules can match a new policy, which results in multiple tags being added for the policy. The policy specific tags can be optionally indexed for faster searching. Once indexed, the CMDB can support policy and policy tag based queries. In one embodiment, policy artifacts can be manipulated within a CMDB tool in a manner consistent with how the CMDB tool handles configuration items (CIs).

Problems are resolved in an application program that runs on an Information Technology (IT) infrastructure that includes IT components. A symptom is generated that identifies a problem in the application program. Selected IT components in the IT infrastructure that may cause the problem in the application program are identified, based on the symptom. Status of the selected IT components is obtained by obtaining a respective situation for a respective IT component. The respective situation is one of a set of component-independent predefined situation categories that is associated with a respective selected IT component. The respective situations provide the status of the selected IT components in a common situation format that includes the associated one of the component-independent predefined situation categories. The respective situations that are obtained are analyzed to identify at least one problem in the selected IT components that may cause the problem in the application program.

Methods, systems (apparatus) and computer program products are provided that control the data rate through a communications adapter having at least one guaranteed bandwidth connection through the communications adapter. The control of the data rate may be accomplished by assigning to guaranteed bandwidth connections, a maximum threshold value proportional to the amount of data to be transmitted through the communications adapter in a time interval to satisfy the guaranteed bandwidth of the connection. Guaranteed bandwidth connections are then limited to this amount of data in a time interval. Furthermore, an outbound data threshold for data sent tot he adapter and a total data threshold for data to or from the adapter may be established and best efforts data not sent to the adapter if either of these thresholds are exceeded within the time interval.

Methods, systems (apparatus) and computer program products that control the data rate through a communications adapter having at least one guaranteed bandwidth connection through the communications adapter are provided. The data rate is controlled by assigning to the guaranteed bandwidth connection, a maximum threshold value proportional to the amount of data to be transmitted through the communications adapter in a time interval to satisfy the guaranteed bandwidth of the connection. The amount of data transmitted through the communications adapter for the guaranteed bandwidth connection is then counted so as to provide a connection data count associated with the guaranteed bandwidth. Data transmitted for the communications adapter associated with the guaranteed bandwidth connection is not transmitted to the communications adapter if transmission of the data would cause the connection data count to exceed the maximum threshold value assigned to the guaranteed bandwidth connection. The connection data count is then reset after expiration of the time interval.

Methods, systems (apparatus) and computer program products are provided which control access to a shared resource in a data processing system by predicting utilization of the shared resource based upon historical utilization of the shared resource. Users of the shared resource are then notified of a potential shortage of the shared resource if the prediction predicts that the shared resource will be over-utilized. The prediction may utilize a linear extrapolation to predict future utilization of the share resource. Furthermore, the interval between predictions of the future utilization may be based on time, number of utilization events or a combination of the two.
