One embodiment of the present invention includes a nozzle defining a passage to receive and discharge working fluid to produce thrust. The nozzle includes the first wall structure opposite a second wall structure. The first wall structure includes a first convergent flap pivotally connected to a first divergent flap. The second wall structure includes a second convergent flap pivotally connected to a second divergent flap. The first wall structure and the second wall structure define the throat along the passage and are reconfigurable to adjust dimensional area of the throat. One or more control valves modulate flow of the pressurized fluid into the passage through a first opening in the first wall structure and a second opening in the second wall structure approximate to the throat to change effective area of the throat by fluidic control.

Nozzle with an adjustable throat

Exhaust mixer and apparatus using same

An attachment for the air intake of a gas turbine engine includes a plurality of particle separators. The particle separators cooperate to define an attachment axis and are spaced circumferentially about the attachment axis. Each particle separator includes a housing defining a separator axis, a first flow passage having at least a portion that is annular, an annular opening, and an annular second flow passage. The first and second flow passages are configured so that inertia of particles entrained in a stream of air flowing through the annular portion of the first flow passage tends to cause the particles to flow from the annular portion through the opening into the second flow passage to allow the stream of air to enter the engine flow passage free of the particles removed therefrom. The separator axes are parallel to and spaced apart from the attachment axis.

Particle separator

A thrust directing mechanism to vector thrust and control discharge throat area with a number of vanes mounted across the passage. The mechanism includes a control link pivotally coupled to each of the vanes. The control link is selectively movable to correspondingly pivot the vanes and has at least two degrees of freedom corresponding to a two coordinate position. A desired orientation of the vanes may be determined as a function of the two coordinate position. The discharge exit area is contracted by adjusting convergence of the vanes. During convergence, the vanes are pivoted to various pivot angles selected to optimize thrust efficiency when contracting the throat area.
