An apparatus and method are provided for utilizing different data storage types to store primary and replicated database directories. Included is a first data storage of a first data storage type including a direct-access storage type. The first data storage is configured to store a primary database directory. Also included is a second data storage of a second data storage type including a share type. The second data storage is configured to store a replicated database directory that replicates at least a portion of the primary database directory.

Apparatus and method for utilizing different data storage types to store primary and replicated database directories

A method according to one embodiment includes importing a plurality of resources associated with an entity, receiving, from the entity, a request for an application that performs predetermined functionality, creating a functionality definition, utilizing the request, determining, from the plurality of resources associated with the entity, one or more necessary resources for implementing the functionality definition, constructing the application that performs the predetermined functionality, utilizing the one or more necessary resources, and implementing the application in an environment of the entity.

An embodiment method for massively parallel processing includes initiating a management instance on an initial machine, the management instance generating an initial partition corresponding to the initial machine, determining a total number of partitions desired for processing a database, the total number of partitions including the initial partition, determining a number of additional machines available to process the database, grouping the initial machine and the additional machines together in a pod, and launching the management instance on the additional machines in the pod to generate the total number of partitions desired for the database. Additional embodiment methods and an embodiment system operable to perform such methods are also disclosed.
