A medical system comprises a display system, a user input device, and a control system communicatively coupled to the display system and the user input device. The control system is configured to display image data of an anatomical region via the display system, determine a target location in the anatomical region, and determine an anatomical boundary based on the target location. The anatomical boundary indicates a surface of an anatomical structure in the anatomical region. The control system is further configured to determine a trajectory zone around a path between an exit point and the target location. The control system is further configured to determine a zone boundary based on an intersection of the trajectory zone with the anatomical boundary.

An exemplary processing system accesses a three-dimensional (3D) model of an anatomical structure of a patient and applies a detection process to the 3D model to detect a single-layer anatomical feature in the anatomical structure. A method comprises receiving, by a medical imaging system having at least one processing device, three-dimensional image data of a patient anatomy. The method also comprises filtering the three-dimensional data to display a portion of the three-dimensional image data that is associated with the patient anatomy and receiving, at the processing device, input from an operator input device. The input comprises navigational directions for virtual movement within a space defined by the three-dimensional image data. The method also includes tracking the virtual movement, defining a tracked pathway based on the tracked virtual movement, and generating a model of the patient anatomy based on the tracked pathway. The model of the patient anatomy is a line model including one or more lines based on the tracked pathway.

A technique for generating DRR (digitally reconstructed radiography) images includes dividing sample points along a ray trajectory through a 3-dimensional dataset of attenuation values into stages. Each of the stages includes a plurality of the sample points. The attenuation values are summed along the ray trajectory for each of the sample points. Intermediate summation values are computed for each of the stages along the ray trajectory and for each of the stages the attenuation values summed within a given stage are summed with a previous stage intermediate summation value calculated for a stage previous to the given stage to generate a given stage intermediate summation value. A final accumulation value being representative of a total attenuation summed along the ray trajectory is calculated.

High quality volume rendering with graphics processing unit

A method and system are presented for direct volume rendering of a deformable volume dataset that represent an object in motion. An original 3D image dataset of the object is acquired at an initial stage of the motion, and segmented. Deformed 3D image datasets of the object are acquired at subsequent stages of the motion. Deformation matrices are computed between the segmented original 3D image dataset and the deformed 3D image datasets. A plurality of deformed mesh patches are generated based on the deformation matrices. 2D textures are generated by dynamically sampling the segmented 3D image dataset, and applied to the deformed mesh patches. The textured deformed mesh patches are evaluated, blended, and composited to generate one or more volume-rendered images of the object in motion.

Direct volume rendering of 4D deformable volume images

DRR generation and enhancement using a dedicated graphics device are described herein. In one embodiment, an example of a process for generating DRR (digitally reconstructed radiography) images includes, but is not limited to, loading a volume rendering program into a graphics device, the volume rendering program representing a predetermined algorithm according to a non-linear attenuation model. In response to 3D scan data, the graphics device is invoked to execute the volume rendering program to perform at least a portion of volume rendering operations on at least a portion of the 3D scan data, which may include modifying the 3D scan data according to the predetermined algorithm to compensate for a difference between a first attenuation of an object with respect to a second attenuation associating a known intensity of the object. Other methods and apparatuses are also described.
