Heat activatable adhesive or sealant compositions

Ionomeric polymer compositions are provided which comprise an ionomeric polymer and about 5 to about 125 parts by weight of gilsonite, per 100 parts by weight of the ionomeric polymer. The inventive compositions can be formulated as processable materials which can be fabricated into articles such as sheets, tubes, and films having improved tear propagation resistance and fire retardance and decreased levels of water absorption.

Waterproofing membranes are disclosed comprising a shrinkable polymer film bonded to a foil layer by a layer of thermoplastic adhesive having sufficient bonding strength below the shrinkage onset temperature of the polymer film to inhibit relative movement between the film and the foil and having sufficient plasticity above the shrinkage onset temperature of the polymer film to permit relative movement between the film and the foil. In a preferred embodiment, the membrane is made self adhesive by including a layer of an adhesive material on that surface of the foil opposite the layer of the thermoplastic adhesive.

Process for coating of substrates with heat curable coating

A method for accurate, on site heat flow measurement through a substrate surface using surface mounted heat flow sensors and an apparatus for on site calibration of surface mounted heat flow sensors are presented. The method comprises mounting on the substrate surface a heat flow sensor which is calibrated to establish the relationship between heat flow through the surface and the resultant induced voltage in the sensor under the convective and radiative heat transfer environmental conditions of the surface, measuring the voltage output induced in the sensor by heat flow through the surface, and converting the voltage output to a quantitative heat flow on the basis of the calibration of the sensor. The apparatus of the invention permits the calibration of the sensors under convective and radiative heat transfer environmental conditions which substantially duplicate those of the experimental substrate.

A method of forming shaped articles from ionically cross-linked polymer compositions by subjecting an unshaped mass of said polymer composition to radio frequency energy of sufficient degree and time to cause dissociation of the ionically cross-linked regions while maintaining the mass at a temperature below the polymer degradation temperature and subjecting the polymer mass to sufficient shaping forces to form the polymer mass into desired shape.
