Scrap vehicles, mixtures of iron and aluminum, plastics are often pressed into bales or cubes to reduce the cost of transportation and storage to a smelter. Considering the dwindling number of large smelters in the United States due to the high pollution associated with coke fired cupolas, a new invention is developed to use natural gas, diesel fuels and clean fuels and hydrocarbons from scrap plastics in the bale. The process consists of three steps. In the first step the scrap bale is heated in a chamber up to temperatures of 1000&#xb0; C. to promote the vaporization of zinc from galvanized steel, the pyrolysis of any plastics or scrap tires in the bale, and the separation of aluminum and magnesium by melting. The heat for this first stage is transferred through flue gases rising from the second and third stages after passing through a recuperator. The remaining scrap once separated from zinc, aluminum, magnesium and plastics is transferred to a second stage and melted and allowed to flow into a third stage where alloying and final removal of sulfur, phosphorus and other contaminants is completed in the hearth under a reverberating flame. Flue gases rising from the first stage are passed through condensers to precipitate vaporized zinc, and to convert hydrocarbons into fuel that is burned in the third stage burner above the hearth.

The invention relates to a process of melting ferrous metal using a gaseous fuel, a liquid fuel or a pulverized solid fuel in a cokeless horizontal reverberatory furnace (FIG.) consisting of a hearth (), an sloped melting chamber () a vertical refractory grid (), a burner (), a recuperator or regenerator () to transfer heat from waste gas and products of combustion to fresh oxygen bearing gases, whereas a burner system is installed on the hearth for combustion of the fuel and oxygen bearing gas, the hearth under the burner acts as a superheater to achieve the temperature necessary for alloying and to receive the molten metal cascading from the sloped melting chamber, the sloped melting chamber being fed from one end by the rising gas products of combustion and in which the waste gases are subject to post-combustion of carbon monoxide and volatiles before passing through a recuperator or a regenerator to pre-heat the oxygen bearing gases necessary for combustion.

Cokeless reverberatory furnace for melting iron with separate hearth and melting chamber

A centrifuge bowl has a bottom accelerator for accelerating the materials from a feed duct extending into the bowl. The accelerator is a molded body having a top plate with a central hole arranged to receive the materials from the bottom feed mouth of the duct and a plurality of vanes underneath the top plate, each vane extending generally outwardly from an inner nose underneath an outer edge of the hole to an outer end at an outer edge of the top plate. The vanes each have a bottom surface lying in an imaginary bottom surface of the molded body which is conical and contains fasteners arranged to be fastened to the conical bottom wall of the bowl. A deflector plate lies underneath the hole with a bottom surface spaced from the imaginary bottom surface and intersecting the height of the vanes.
