A method and system for optimizing mobile telecommunications networks utilizing geographical positioning information. Initially, a particular telecommunications event, such as a handover event, call set-up event, a dropped call event, or a high bit error rate event, is designated, such that an occurrence of the particular telecommunications event automatically triggers geographical positioning of a mobile unit within a mobile telecommunications network. A geographical positioning request is then transmitted to a mobile location center within the telecommunications network, in response to an occurrence of the particular telecommunications event. Thereafter, geographical positioning information associated with the particular telecommunications event and the mobile unit is determined, in response to the transmission of the geographical positioning request to the mobile location center. The geographical positioning information is thereafter stored in a database within the mobile telecommunications network. The geographical positioning information can thereafter be analyzed in order to optimize telecommunications operations within the mobile telecommunications network.

Method and system for optimizing a telecommunications utilizing positioning information in network recording programs

A telecommunications system and method is disclosed for provisioning assistance Global Position System (GPS) data to a GPS receiver within a mobile terminal. This can be accomplished by having multiple reference GPS receivers located throughout a cellular network, each reference GPS receiver being capable of providing locally valid lists of visible satellites and the associated ephemeris and clock correction information. The location of the Base Transceiver Station (BTS) within the cell that the mobile terminal with a built-in or attached GPS receiver is currently located in can be used as the local position estimate for that mobile terminal. From this local position estimate, the nearest reference GPS receiver can be ascertained and the relevant assistance data can then be sent to the GPS receiver within the mobile terminal through the cellular network to enable the built-in GPS receiver to calculate its position relatively quickly.

System and method for provisioning assistance global positioning system information to a mobile station

A telecommunications system and method is disclosed for reducing the signaling load on the network by instructing a Location Measurement Unit (LMU) to measure the relation between the absolute time and air interface timing, e.g., TDMA frame number, only when a positioning request has been received. Prior to configuring the LMU for time of arrival (TOA)-based positioning of a particular mobile station, the Serving Mobile Location Center (SMLC) can request an LMU associated with a particular cell to perform an asynchronous handover within the same cell. During this asynchronous handover, the LMU measures the relation between the absolute time and the TDMA frame number, and sends this relation information to the SMLC. The SMLC uses this relation information in configuring the LMU for TOA-based positioning of the particular mobile station.

System and method for determining absolute time based upon air interface timing in time of arrival based positioning

A telecommunications system and method is disclosed for allowing an ongoing Time of Arrival (TOA) based positioning of a mobile station to proceed if a radio related handover has occurred before the expiration of a delta timer in a Base Station Controller (BSC). The BSC stores an HOTIMER value therein, which corresponds to the amount of time involved in a normal radio-related handover procedure from the sending of a Handover Command to the reception of a Handover Complete message. If the BSC delta timer is active, e.g., positioning is ongoing, and the BSC determines that a radio related handover is needed, the BSC checks the amount of time remaining in the BSC delta timer. If that amount is more than the HOTIMER, then the ongoing positioning is not canceled.

System and method for time of arrival based positioning during handover

A system, method, and apparatus for determining a position of a mobile station in a mobile telecommunications network is disclosed. Speech interruptions during mobile station positioning are reduced or eliminated by controlling the number of access bursts transmitted by the mobile station. The number of access burst transmitted by the mobile station is controlled to a level commensurate with the degree of positioning accuracy required by the requesting application. The number of access bursts is calculated by the Mobile Location Center (MLC) and communicated to the Base Transceiver Station (BTS) via the Base Station Controller (BSC). After the requisite number of access bursts are received, the BTS transmits a signal to the mobile station, causing the mobile station to cease transmitting access bursts.

System, method and apparatus to prepare base transceiver station for intra-cell asynchronous positioning handover

A method for collecting radio signal timing values for use in determining the location of a mobile station in a wireless network. The method includes acquiring a radio signal timing value from the mobile station's serving base transceiver station. A first handover of the mobile station is initiated from the serving base transceiver station to a second base transceiver station. A radio signal timing value is determined as part of the handover procedure. After the first handover is completed, a second handover of the mobile station is initiated from the second base transceiver station to a third base transceiver station, wherein a third timing value is determined as part of the handover procedure. The second handover is also completed.

Mobile station location determination using radio signal timing values

A wireless communication network and methodology providing GPS assistance data for positioning of mobiles with built-in GPS receivers (GPS-MS). The system and methodology includes obtaining a site location of the BTS currently serving a GPS-MS to be located, as well as obtaining the air interface time in relation to the absolute GPS time at the BTS currently serving the GPS-MS. Knowing the geographical location of the BTS currently serving the GPS-MS, range measurement assistance data is provided with a time of calculation to the GPS-MS. This information is used by the GPS-MS to obtain GPS measurement data at the indicated time of calculation using this a priori information. The GPS-MS obtains GPS measurement data based on the a priori information quickly, and returns the GPS assistance data to a mobile location center (MLC) which ultimately determines the position of the GPS-MS. The MLC has ephermis data, and converts the air interface time to the absolute GPS time for calculation of the GPS-MS position. Minimal traffic across the wireless network is required, and the position of the GPS-MS can be quickly obtained.

GPS assistance data for positioning of mobiles with built-in GPS

A telecommunications system and method is disclosed for providing adaptive thresholds for cell load sharing (CLS) based upon the current traffic situations. This can be accomplished by a Base Station Controller (BSC) monitoring the traffic load in a cell during a predetermined time period. If the traffic load is high for the entire time period, the CLS thresholds can be changed to maximize efficient channel resource utilization. In one embodiment, a look-up table can be used to set the thresholds for each cell based upon the traffic level, e.g., the percentage of idle channels, during the time period. Alternatively, the BSC can monitor only the traffic load in a cell with an usually high amount of traffic for the same time period. Thereafter, the BSC can change the thresholds in the high traffic cell and neighboring cells to maximize channel efficiency within the network.

System and method for adaptive thresholds for cell load sharing

In a base station for use in a mobile communication system for communication with mobile subscribers over a plurality of radio channels, an improved transceiver unit is provided including a traffic controller handling downlink and uplink communication traffic with mobile subscribers over the plurality of radio channels, and a measuring device measuring arrival times of burst signals from a mobile subscriber communicating on a select one of the radio channels, or from a mobile subscriber communicating on another transceiver unit, on one of the plurality of radio channels.

In accordance with the invention, there is disclosed a system for determining location of a mobile station. The mobile station includes a transceiver operating in a wireless network and a GPS receiver. The system includes a wireless network control system including GPS receivers for obtaining ephemeris data. The control system develops assistance information from the ephemeris data and transmits the assistance information to the mobile station via the wireless network. The assistance information represents range at a fixed location in the wireless network in proximity to the mobile station at a select time, and derivatives of the range, relative to plural select satellites in the GPS. The mobile station utilizes received assistance information for searching the composite received signals from the plural select satellites in the GPS to measure a code phase for plural ones of the select satellites in the GPS and returning the measured code phases to the wireless network control system via the wireless network. The wireless network control system computes location of the mobile station in the wireless network utilizing a fixed location and the measured code phases.

Method and system for aiding GPS receivers via a cellular or PCS network

An improved system and method for determining a position of a mobile station in a mobile telecommunications network is disclosed. The system includes a database having geographical information pertaining to the service area of the telecommunications network, including whether service areas therein are characterized as urban areas, suburban areas or &ldquo;badurban&rdquo; areas in which radio communication is especially limited. The system further includes a mobile location center (MLC) which, among other things, calculates the number of access signal bursts which are required for transmission by the mobile station to be located. The access burst number is calculated based upon the geographical information pertaining to the service areas stored in the database and upon a requested position determination accuracy. By measuring the time of arrival delay of the burst signal transmission received by two or more base transceiver stations, the MLC computes the position of the mobile station.

System and method for time of arrival positioning measurements based upon network characteristics

A system and method that makes more efficient utilization of BTS resources when BTSs are employed in time of arrival (TOA) measurements as is common in mobile positioning operations. A maximum signaling delay is assumed for which BTS resource assignment is delayed by a default time span in the event of an impending TOA measurement thereby allowing the BTS availment of the resources which would otherwise be idle yet assigned and therefore unavailable for other BTS functions during the period of signaling delay. The period of resource assignment delay may be increased or decreased, the actual adaption of the delay dependent on the true signaling delay.

System and method for adaptively modifying base station transceiver resources for time of arrival measurements

A telecommunications system and method is disclosed which performs authorization checks prior to allowing a location service to position a mobile terminal within a cellular network. The various checks involve ensuring that the requesting agency has authorization to request positioning of mobile terminals, determining whether positioning of mobile terminals is allowed within the cellular network that the mobile terminal is currently located in, verifying the authenticity of the identity of the mobile positioning center, ascertaining whether the mobile subscriber has allowed the requesting agency to position the mobile terminal, and confirming that all relevant criteria for positioning have been met by both the mobile subscriber and the requesting agency.

A telecommunications system and method is disclosed which utilizes a terminal-based browser, such as the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) 'deck', within a Mobile Station (MS) to connect the MS to web-based location services and to a Mobile Positioning Center (MPC). Terminal based browsers, such as WAP 'deck', allow for the graphical presentation of the current location of the MS on a display on the MS and provide an interactive user dialog, which permits the mobile subscriber to determine the format of the graphical presentation of the current location of the MS.
