In one embodiment, an apparatus for transmitting a signal with an improved termination is disclosed. The apparatus includes a driver to generate a differential mode signal superimposed on a common mode signal at a differential driver output of the driver. The differential driver output includes a first driver output and a second driver output. The apparatus also includes a termination circuit coupled between the first driver output and the second driver output. The termination circuit includes a capacitor connected to a node. The termination circuit also includes a first resistor and a first inductive element coupled in series between the first driver output and the node. In addition, the termination circuit includes a second resistor and a second inductive element coupled in series between the second driver output and the node.

Transmitting apparatus with source termination

In one embodiment, an HDMI connector includes a plurality of conductive paths. The plurality of conductive paths correspond to four channels, i.e., three differential data channels and one differential clock channel. Each channel includes three conductive paths, which correspond to a differential pair and a dedicated ground. Each conductive path has a contact on one end and a pin on the opposite end. The pins of the plurality of conductive paths are arranged to attach to corresponding surface mounting pads in at least two columns of contact points. For each channel, the pad for the dedicated ground is larger than the pads for the differential pair, thereby providing shielding between the differential pairs of different channels.

Embodiments of the invention are generally directed to simultaneous transmission of clock and bidirectional data over a communication channel. An embodiment of a transmitting device includes a modulator to generate a modulated signal including a clock signal and a data signal, the clock signal being modulated by a first signal edge of the modulated signal and the data signal being modulated by a position of a second signal edge of the modulated signal; a driver to drive the modulated signal on a communication channel; an echo canceller to subtract reflected signals on the communication channel; and a data recovery module to recover a signal received on the communication channel, the received signal being encoded by Return-to-Zero (RZ) encoding, the signal being received simultaneously with driving the modulated signal on the communication channel.

Embodiments relate to a receptacle assembly for connecting to a plug of a connector. The receptacle includes a first contact on a first side of an insulating member. The first contact electrically connects to a first plug contact when the connector engages with the receptacle in a first orientation. The receptacle includes a second contact on a second side of the insulating member. The second contact electrically connects to the first plug contact when the connector engages with the receptacle in a second orientation. The second contact extends to a printed circuit board and is connected to the first contact via a first conductive bridge at a first location closer to the printed circuit board than the first plug contact. The first and second contacts are connected via a second conductive bridge at a second location closer to the first plug contact than the first conductive bridge.

In one embodiment, a source device and sink device communicate with one another via a multimedia link. The multimedia link includes a cable and a plug. The cable includes one or more data lines, power lines, ground lines or control bus lines. The plug includes a plurality of pins each connected to the one or more lines included in the cable. The plug also includes a ground plane and a power plane, wherein a ground pin of the plug connects the ground plane to the ground line of the cable of the multimedia link and a power pin of the plug connects the ground plane to the power line of the cable. In one example, the ground plane and power plane are placed within a threshold distance of one another, such that the power line connected to the power plane via the power pin behaves as a signal return path.

Techniques and mechanisms for exchanging communications which each represent a respective combination of data and clock signaling. In an embodiment, encoder logic generates a first signal pair, including encoding a first differential data signal pair with a first clock signal of a differential clock signal pair. The encoder logic further generates a second signal pair, including encoding a second differential data signal pair with a second clock signal of the same differential clock signal pair. In another embodiment, decoder logic receives and decodes the first signal pair and the second signal pair, wherein the decoding generates the first differential data signal pair, the second differential data signal pair and a clock signal.

Apparatus, system and method for providing clock and data signaling

Embodiments of the invention are generally directed to detection of cable connections for electronic devices. An embodiment of an apparatus includes a port for the connection of a cable, the port being compatible with a first protocol and a second protocol, the port including a connector for the second protocol, the port including multiple pins including a first pin and a second pin. The apparatus further includes a pull-up resistor coupled between the first pin and a voltage source, a pull-down resistor coupled between the second pin and ground, and a voltage detection element coupled with the second pin. The apparatus is to determine that a cable compatible with the first protocol is connected to the port if the voltage detection element detects a voltage above a first threshold.

A method, apparatus and system are provided for generating and facilitating Mobile High-Definition Multimedia Interface. In one embodiment, an apparatus includes a transmitter configured to merge multiple channels of a high-definition interface into a single channel to generate a mobile high-definition interface, the mobile high-definition interface configured to facilitate carrying of high-definition media content in a mobile device. The apparatus further includes a receiver coupled with the transmitter, the receiver configured to receive the single channel, and to unmerge the single channel into the multiple channels.

Method, apparatus and system for generating and facilitating mobile high-definition multimedia interface

A cable including circuitry for asserting information to a user or external device and a system including such a cable. The cable can include conductors, a memory storing cable data, and circuitry configured to respond to a request received on at least one of the conductors by accessing at least some of the cable data and asserting the accessed data serially to at least one of the conductors (e.g., for transmission to an external device). A communication system including a transmitter, a receiver, and a serial link, in which encoded data (e.g., encoded video data and encoded auxiliary data) are transmitted from the transmitter to the receiver. The serial link can but need not be a TMDS or TMDS-like link. In typical embodiments, alternating bursts of encoded video data and encoded auxiliary data are transmitted over each of one or more channels of the link. Other aspects of the invention are transmitters for use in encoding data for transmission over a serial link, and methods for sending encoded data over a serial link. In accordance with the invention, the data to be transmitted are encoded using a subset (sometimes referred to as a selected set of code words) of a full set of code words. The selected set of code words is selected such that each stream of encoded data (comprising only such code words) transmitted over a serial link has a bit pattern that is less susceptible to inter-symbol interference ('ISI') during transmission than is the bit pattern determined by a conventionally encoded version of the same data (comprising not only the selected set of code words but also other members of the full set). In general, the best choice for the selected set of code words selected from a full set of binary code words depends on the particular coding implemented by the full set. Typically, the selected set of code words includes words whose serial patterns (during transmission) have fewer contiguous zeros and ones (and thus are less susceptible to ISI during transmission) than do those code words in the full set that are not selected. In preferred embodiments in which the bits of the selected set of code words are transmitted over a serial link as sequences of rising and falling voltage transitions, the bit pattern of each transmitted stream of the selected set of code words implements DC balancing to limit the voltage drift over time.

Encoding method and system for reducing inter-symbol interference effects in transmission over a serial link

A method of testing a circuit having an interface which includes data and clock information where phase jitter is introduced into the clock that produces the clock information. The clock is cycled by increasing the period of the clock for a predetermined number of clock cycles so as to introduce an increasing phase shift advance in the clock. The clock is also cycled by decreasing the period of the clock for a predetermined number of clock cycles so as to introduce an increasing phase shift delay in the clock. The circuit under test is caused to sample the data using a clock derived from the clock information. The sampled data is then compared with reference data to determine the error rate.
