Embodiments of the present disclosure provide a transmitter, a receiver and methods of operating a transmitter and a receiver. In one embodiment, the transmitter includes a synchronization unit configured to provide a primary synchronization signal and a secondary synchronization signal having first and second segments. The transmitter also includes a secondary scrambling unit configured to provide a scrambled secondary synchronization signal, wherein scrambling agents for the first and second segments are derived from a primary synchronization sequence of the primary synchronization signal. The secondary scrambling unit is further configured to provide an additional scrambling of one of the first and second segments, wherein a second scrambling agent is derived from the remaining segment of a secondary synchronization sequence of the secondary synchronization signal. The transmitter further includes a transmit unit configured to transmit the primary synchronization signal and the scrambled secondary synchronization signal.

Various techniques described herein provide a preamble design using one or more symbols. One or more preamble symbols may be interspersed within a header portion of a PLC frame to facilitate estimation of a frame boundary and/or sampling frequency offset, for example, in the presence of impulsive noise.

In a disclosed embodiment, a power line communication (PLC) transmitter includes a forward error correction (FEC) encoder that receives payload data and adds parIty information to the data to create an encoded output, a fragmenter that receives the encoded output from the FEC encoder and segments the encoded output into a plurality of fragments, a fragment repetition encoder that receives the plurality of fragments from the fragmenter and copies each of the fragments a selected number of times, and an interleaver that receives the copies of the plurality of fragments from the fragment repetition encoder and interleaves the copies of the plurality of fragments for transmission on a power line.

Systems and methods for designing, using, and/or implementing beacon-enabled communications for variable payload transfers are described. In various embodiments, these systems and methods may be applicable to power line communications (PLC). For example, a method may include implementing a superframe having a plurality of beacon slots, a plurality of intermediate slots following the beacon slots, and a poll-based Contention Free Period (CFP) slot following the intermediate slots. Each of the beacon slots and each of the intermediate slots may correspond to a respective one of a plurality of frequency subbands, and the poll-based CFP slot may correspond to a combination of the plurality of frequency subbands. The method may also include receiving a poll request over a first of the plurality of frequency subbands during the poll-based CFP slot, and then transmitting a data packet over a second of the plurality of frequency subbands during the poll-based CFP slot.

A backhaul radio is disclosed that operates in multipath propagation environments such as obstructed LOS conditions with uncoordinated interference sources in the same operating band. Such a backhaul radio may use an advanced ARQ protocol, which uses an ACK_MAP, constructed by a combination of implicit and explicit signaling, and performs a combination of proactive and reactive retransmissions.

Such a backhaul radio may use adaptive beamforming and sample alignment at the transmitter to enhance the link performance. Such backhaul radios may communicate with each other to compute and apply optimal beamforming parameters for a particular propagation environment through a closed-loop feedback mechanism.

The present invention provides a receiver. In one embodiment, the receiver includes a receive portion employing transmission signals from a transmitter having multiple antennas and capable of providing channel estimates. The receiver also includes a feedback generator portion configured to provide to the transmitter a pre-coder selection for data transmission that is based on the channel estimates, wherein the pre-coder selection corresponds to a grouping of frequency-domain resource blocks. The present invention also provides a transmitter having multiple antennas. In one embodiment, the transmitter includes a transmit portion coupled to the multiple antennas and capable of applying pre-coding to a data transmission for a receiver. The transmitter also includes a feedback decoding portion configured to decode a pre-coder selection for the data transmission that is fed back from the receiver, wherein the pre-coder selection corresponds to a grouping of frequency-domain resource blocks.
