Load balancing across hosts in a computer system is triggered based on pairwise comparisons of resource utilization at different host. A method for load balancing across hosts includes the steps of determining a resource utilization difference between first and second hosts, wherein the first host has a higher resource utilization than the second host, comparing the resource utilization difference against a threshold difference, and upon determining that the resource utilization difference exceeds the threshold difference, selecting a workload executing in the first host for migration to the second host.

A placement simulator is used for testing a placement engine in a virtual machine environment. The placement simulator includes a simulation controller, an event manager, and an inventory manager. The simulation controller receives input data for a simulated datacenter. The event manager invokes event handlers for a sequence of events from the input data. The inventory manager stores states of inventory objects to simulate deployment of virtual infrastructure resources by the placement engine based on the sequence of the events.

System and method for simulating virtual machine (VM) placement in virtual datacenters

A method for simulating a virtual computing environment includes specifying one or more flavors of resource consumers and one or more flavors of datastores to be provisioned on a tree of hosts for a simulation of a distributed virtualization scheduler. The method also includes generating a tree of hosts for the resource consumers and datastores based on the specified flavors and using a tree generator component of the distributed virtualization scheduler. The method further includes generating a plurality of resource consumer requests for the generated tree of hosts according to a pattern-based input, where the resource consumer requests include requests for the specified resource consumer flavors and the specified datastore flavors. The method also includes simulating execution of the resource consumer requests on the generated tree of hosts using the distributed virtualization scheduler, and utilizing a result of the simulated execution to improve a placement decision for a resource consumer.

Embodiments of a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium and a computer system are disclosed. In an embodiment, a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium containing program instructions for managing host computers that run virtual machines into host-groups within a cluster is disclosed. When executed, the instructions cause one or more processors to perform steps including determining if a virtual machine entity needs additional resources and, if the virtual machine entity needs additional resources, mapping a host computer to a host-group with which the virtual machine entity is associated.
