Emergency call-routing apparatus, and an associated method, for use in a packet-based, telephonic network. An emergency call router is positioned selectably to provide local call handling functionality to a local network that is normally connected by way of an access gateway to the telephonic network whose operation is normally controlled by a softswitch. The apparatus is used when, e.g., a total communication link failure condition occurs between the access gateway and the softswitch. The emergency call router selectably routes calls within the local network to permit continued, local calling functionality in spite of the failure of the communication link. High-priority calls, such as calls placed to an emergency dispatch center, are routed within the local network to a designated, local-network station. And local calls are also selectably routed by the emergency call router. A call priority scheme is also used in the event that call capacity is exceeded. Calls of higher priority are permitted while calls of lower priority are blocked.

A system and method for writing Indian languages using the English writing scheme is provided that includes specifying a script using the English alphabet to represent the various characters and character combinations in various Indian languages. The specified script follows the writing conventions of English. This script is based on how the Indian languages are spoken and rules are specified to facilitate mapping the sounds represented in English characters to the native language in its written form. This common method is intended for writing Hindi and related languages, such as Sanskrit, Marathi, and Gujarathi, and Bengali and somewhat distant, but closely related Dravidian languages, such as Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada, and Telegu.

A method for location-based call distribution is provided that includes receiving from a customer communication device a request to establish a communication session with an agent communication device based on a specified telephone number. An agent database is searched for the specified telephone number. Location data corresponding to the specified telephone number is retrieved from the agent database when the specified telephone number is found in the agent database. The customer communication device is located. The agent communication device that is nearest to the customer communication device is located based on the retrieved location data. A communication session is established between the customer communication device and the nearest agent communication device.

A system, intelligent network service engine and method are described than can perform a real time fraud analysis on an originating side of a call stream to determine whether or not a call is a fraudulent call before the call is connected to a called party. In particular, the system includes a switch capable of receiving a call originated by a calling party and an intelligent network service engine capable receiving information (e.g., call origination data) about the call from the switch. The intelligent network service engine (e.g., home location register, service control point, INSight platform) then uses real time fraud management tools to analyze the call origination data to determine whether or not the call has a fraudulent attribute before the call is connected to a called party. The system can be configured as a wired communications network, a wireless communications network and/or an Internet network.

A telecommunications system, service control point and method are provided that can establish specialized dialing plan(s) utilizing one or more of the unused country codes in the traditional international dialing plan. Logic associated with the call treatment application determines an appropriate portion of the call party's presentation profile to be provided to the subscriber based on subscriber selection, call party presentation restrictions, or both. A multimedia interface operable with the subscriber's terminal is actuated for delivering an indicium associated with the selected portion of the call party's presentation profile to the subscriber.

A call treatment system and method in a multimedia-capable network for providing an enhanced call waiting service wherein multiple calls waiting to be serviced are accorded different treatments based on multimedia responses. When a network element serving a subscriber currently engaged in an established call connection with a party receives an indication that an incoming call is being directed towards the subscriber from at least one calling party, a multimedia session engine is invoked by the network element to launch a call treatment application for the subscriber. If the number of calls allowed to wait on the subscriber exceeds a predetermined maximum value, the incoming call is accorded a predetermined default treatment. Otherwise, the call treatment application is operable to query a subscriber profile associated with the subscriber to determine a suitable multimedia interface to be presented for effectuating a response using a browser-based interactive system.

A telecommunications system, service control point and method are described that can pre-screen a telephone call to help prevent telephone toll fraud. More specifically, the telecommunications system includes a service control point capable of receiving information about a telephone call originated by a calling party, and further capable of determining whether the telephone call has a fraudulent attribute. If the telephone call has a fraudulent attribute, then the calling party is informed that there is a possibility of telephone toll fraud occurring if the telephone call is connected to a called party. And, if the telephone call does not have a fraudulent attribute, then the telephone call is automatically connected to the called party.

Telecommunications system, service control point and method for pre-screening telephone calls to help prevent telephone toll fraud

Callers to a number subscribing to a screening application are prompted that a fee will be charged for the connection to be completed. The prompting can occur at the initiation of the call, prior to any connection to the called party, or after the called party has had a chance to screen the call. The calling party can choose whether to complete the connection or to terminate the call. If the connection is completed, the fee is charged; otherwise, the call is terminated. Accordingly, most unwanted calls are avoided and users are compensated for receiving unwanted calls that are completed.
