Methods and systems for managing operation of data processing systems are disclosed. To manage operation of the data processing systems, the data processing systems may host management controllers that manage the operation of the data processing systems. The management controllers may be programmable, and may initiate recoveries for the management controllers when operation management software becomes corrupted or is unavailable for other reasons. During the recoveries, new copies of the operation management software may be obtained and used to initiate desired operation of the management controllers.

System and method for managing recovery of management controllers

An information handling system includes a memory and a baseboard management controller. The memory includes a recovery partition including a recovery kernel, a first boot partition including first firmware, and a second boot partition including backup firmware. The baseboard management controller (BMC) attempts a first boot operation of the first firmware in the first boot partition. In response to a failure of the first boot operation, the BMC attempts a second boot operation of the backup firmware in the second boot partition. In response to a failure of the second boot operation, the BMC operates a recovery kernel. During the operation of the recovery kernel, the BMC provides a firmware request to an enclosure controller, receives blocks of correct firmware from a functioning baseboard management controller, stores the blocks of correct firmware in the first boot partition, attempts and completes a third boot operation of the correct firmware.

An information handling system may include a host system that includes a host system processor and a host system memory coupled to the host system processor. The information handling system may further include a management controller configured to provide out-of-band management of the host system. The management controller may be configured to establish a virtual console session between the host system and a remote terminal. The management controller may further be configured to, in response to a command from the remote terminal to send data from the remote terminal to the host system, receive the data from the remote terminal; and transmit the data to the host system character-by-character via a keyboard interface of the host system.

Embodiments of the present disclosure provide a system and method for providing a virtual media gateway in which an Information Handling Systems (IHSs) configured on a private network may be managed using a systems management console. One embodiment of the virtual media gateway system includes a systems manager in communication with multiple server IHSs configured in a data center. The systems manager includes executable code to establish a first login session with a public network configured in the data center, and using the first login session, receive a request to communicate with one of the computing devices. The executable code is further executable to authenticate the systems manager with the one server IHS on behalf of the end-user to establish a second login session through a private network, and generate a console for providing user interaction with the one computing device via the second login session.

System and method for providing a virtual media gateway using a systems management console

An expander I/O module discovery/management system includes a secondary system chassis housing an expander I/O module coupled to a server device. The server device identifies the secondary system chassis and an expander I/O module port utilized by that server device, and then generates and transmits an expander I/O module reporting communication identifying the secondary system chassis and the expander I/O module port. A primary system chassis houses a switching I/O module coupled to the expander I/O module. The switching I/O module receives the expander I/O module reporting communication and determines that the secondary system chassis identified in the expander I/O module reporting communication is different than the primary system chassis. In response, the switching I/O module assigns a virtual slot to the expander I/O module, and assigns a virtual port associated with the virtual slot to the expander I/O module port identified in the expander I/O module reporting communication.

Expander I/O module discovery and management system

An information handling system may include a host system and a management controller configured to provide out-of-band management of the information handling system. The management controller may be configured to: receive, from a management console, a request to establish virtual media for the host system; cause the requested virtual media to be mounted as a drive accessible to the host system; receive read requests from the host system for data associated with the mounted drive; and cache data from the virtual media in a local cache such that at least some of the read requests from the host system are serviceable via the local cache instead of via a network request to the management console.

An information handling system may include a host system including a host system processor and a host system memory coupled to the host system processor; and a management controller configured to provide out-of-band management of the host system. The management controller may be configured to establish a virtual console session between the host system and a remote terminal. The management controller may further be configured to, in response to a command from the remote terminal to send data from the remote terminal to the host system, mount a partition of the management controller such that the partition is accessible to the host system, wherein the partition includes the data. A method for providing virtualization of information handling resources includes accessing a information handling system and a information handling resource, accessing a first virtual function configured to cause virtualized access to the information handling resource through the interface, accessing a second virtual function configured to cause virtualized access to the information handling resource through the interface, and selectively mapping the first virtual function and the second virtual function to information handling systems of the system. The selective mapping includes preventing the first virtual function and the second virtual function from both being mapped to the same information handling system.

In accordance with embodiments of the present disclosure, a system may include a chassis, one or more chassis management controllers housed in the chassis, and a switch management controller. The chassis may be configured to receive a plurality of modular information handling systems. The one or more chassis management controllers may be configured to receive a storage management command, encapsulate the storage management command in a first datagram, and communicate the first datagram to a switch management controller housed in the chassis. The switch management controller may be configured to extract the storage management command from the first datagram, identify a storage controller associated with the storage management command, and communicate an input/output control request to the storage controller based on the storage management command.

A method for managing the power of a chassis includes receiving a plurality of modular information handling systems into the chassis, receiving a plurality of information handling resources into the chassis, virtualizing access of one of the modular information handling resources to two or more of the plurality of modular information handling systems, the modular information handling systems sharing the modular information handling resource, and, upon initialization of one of the information handling systems, determining power requirements of the shared information handling resource, receiving power requirements from the information handling systems, determining whether the power requirements from the information handling system includes power requirements of the shared information handling resource, subtracting the power requirements of the shared information handling resource from the power requirements of the information handling system to determine resultant power requirements, comparing the resultant power requirements with available power, and allowing operation of the information handling system.
