Methods, apparatus, systems and computer program products are provided for an improved media content rating system. The rating system herein disclosed is highly-granular in nature, in that, the rating system allows for ratings to be based on the number of times that portions, segments, clips of the media file are played or otherwise executed, as opposed to basing the media content rating solely on the number of times that the media file is played. In this regard, the aspects herein described may further provide for ratings of the portions, segments, clips of the media content as opposed to limiting the rating to a rating for the overall media content file.

Methods and apparatus for an enhanced media content rating system

A deployment and distribution model improves content delivery with a business incentive for placement of kiosks with one or more wireless access points in public locations so that portable media players (PMPs) can receive media content (e.g., audio, video, text, haptic content, etc.). In addition, coordination between subscribing users of PMPs, vendors who provide kiosks, and a network central controller of a content distribution system allow for prepositioning of video content at the kiosks through economically desirable low data rate communication links from the network (e.g., dial-up modem, DSL, etc.); coordinated queuing of downloads (e.g., partial downloads) between kiosk to PMP, peer-to-peer (P2P) downloading between PMPs, and uploads from PMP to kiosk; billing/crediting to correspond with such participation in the distribution; and changing priority/selection of prepositioning of content at kiosks to reflect a clientele profile.

A dynamic shared forward link channel (or 'data' channel) is used to send multicast data to a group of wireless devices, e.g., using a common long code mask for the data channel. Reference power control (PC) bits are also sent on the data channel and used for signal quality estimation. A shared forward link control channel is used to send user-specific signaling to individual wireless devices, e.g., using time division multiplexing (TDM) and a unique long code mask for each wireless device. A shared forward link indicator channel is used to send reverse link (RL) PC bits to the wireless devices, e.g., using TDM. The data channel is jointly power controlled by all wireless devices receiving the data channel. The control and indicator channels are individually power controlled by each wireless device such that the signaling and RL PC bits sent on these channels for the wireless device are reliably received.

A method and apparatus provide for scheduling reverse link transmission for a mobile station in a timely manner. A base station () may transmit on a forward link high rate channel and a forward link low rate channel to a mobile station during a common time slot. The high rate and low rate channels may be respectively the F-PDCH and the F-PDCCH. The base station may transmit a reverse link transmission scheduling information on the low rate channel. The mobile station may schedule transmission on the reverse link channel, such as R-SCH, based on the data received on the low rate channel. Since the low rate channel has only scheduling data (16 bits) and the high rate channel may have no data (null data) at all, the base station may decide to transmit the reverse link scheduling information to the mobile station very quickly on the forward link.

A system for improving the efficiency of a wireless communications network that employs a plurality of frequencies per cell. The system includes a first mechanism that monitors the network load associated with each of the plurality of frequencies and provides corresponding status values in response thereto. A second mechanism compares the status values to predetermined loading criteria and provides an indication in response thereto when one or more of the status values meet the criteria. A third mechanism redistributes the network load in accordance with the indication. In a specific embodiment, the criteria include one or more predetermined thresholds such that when one or more of the predetermined thresholds is surpassed by the one or more of the status values, the criteria are met. The status values are representative of loading conditions for communications system resources associated with each of the frequencies. The loading conditions are representative of currently available resources allocated for each of the plurality of frequencies. Each status value includes a hardware resource component, an air link resource component, and a handling resource component. Each component is indicative of respective remaining resources. The hardware resource component incorporates the number of currently available channel elements for an associated frequency. The air link resource component incorporates transmit power available for a particular frequency. The handling resource component incorporates the number of available Walsh codes for a particular frequency.

System and method for minimizing hardware and maximizing capacity in a wireless communications system

A system and method for detecting discontinuous transmission (DTX) frames. The inventive method includes the steps of receiving data transmitted in a plurality of frames; classifying each of the frames; analyzing the classification of a number of successive frames of the received data and providing a metric with respect thereto; and determining, in response to the metric, if a frame is a discontinuous frame. In the illustrative embodiment, the step of classifying includes the step of error checking the frames using a cyclic redundancy check (CRC) error checking protocol. The received frames are classified as good frames (G), erasure frames (E), or discontinuous frames (D). A numerical value is assigned to each of the frames based on the classification thereof. Next, the frames are filtered to provide an output Yn=Yn&#x2212;1+Xn where 'n' is a frame number, Yn is the filter output for a given frame n, Yn&#x2212;1 is the filter output for a previous frame, and Xn is a stream of input frames. A threshold is set for the output Yn to facilitate the detection of discontinuous frames. That is, a detection of a discontinuous transmission frame is indicated when a frame is classified as an 'erasure' and the filter output exceeds the threshold. On the detection of a discontinuous frame, the classification of the frame is changed from &#x2018;erasure&#x2019; to &#x2018;discontinuous&#x2019;. By reclassifying improperly classified erasure frames, the mobile receiver is inhibited from requesting retransmission of the frames or a change in the transmit power level. Consequently, network throughput and capacity are optimized and system power is conserved.

A visit to an overhead channel to obtain base station identifiers is made if it is necessary to do so. Base station identifiers are indicative of an approximate location of a terminal. The determination to update the base station identifiers may be made by monitoring one or more base stations in the terminal's active set. In another aspect, the terminal can originate a new data call immediately after the necessary base station identifiers have been obtained from the overhead channel, without having to wait for the expiration of a timer (e.g., the dormant timer). Moreover, by maintaining the data session when terminating the data call for the overhead visit, data communication may be more quickly resumed, for a new data call originated after the overhead visit, using the same configured protocols.

Various techniques for improving a wireless communication device are described. The techniques may include reducing power in a wireless communication device for a first sleep period and then increasing power in the wireless communication device for an intermediate wake period after the first sleep period to estimate an error of the sleep clock. The method may further include reducing power in the wireless communication device for a second sleep period after the intermediate wake period. The intermediate wake mode implemented during the intermediate period can be used to estimate the error of the sleep clock without performing one or more tasks associated with an awake mode, such as demodulation. The techniques may facilitate the effective use of low frequency low power clocks for sleep mode, even when relatively large slot cycles are defined within a slotted paging system.

The present invention provides a method and apparatus for maximizing throughput of a data call in a wireless communication system in which data is transmitted from a wireless station, such as a mobile station, on multiple assigned channels in accordance with a known transmission standard, such as IS-95B. The multiple assigned channels include a fundamental channel and at least one supplemental channel. Data is formatted into variable rate data frames and transmitted on the fundamental channel and the supplemental channel. A wireless receiver, such as a base station, receives the multiple assigned channels. The wireless receiver demodulates and decodes data frames associated with each of the multiple assigned channels. The wireless receiver determines a likely initial data rate for each demodulated and decode data frame. The wireless receiver correlates all of the likely data rates, by comparison to one another and to a relevant transmission protocol standard, to determine a maximum likelihood combination of data rates. The maximum likelihood combination of data rates includes a maximum likelihood data rate corresponding to each likely data rate. Decoded data frames are invalidated and erased when the likely data frame rates do not match corresponding maximum likelihood data rates.

Techniques for minimizing call setup latency are disclosed. In one aspect, multiple signaling messages are encapsulated and sent as a single message thus reducing the total delay incurred by sequential transmission. In one embodiment, an encapsulation message includes a field indicating the number of messages encapsulated therein. In one example, the encapsulation is performed at a Link Access Control (LAC) layer. Alternate embodiments may perform encapsulation at an alternate layer.
