A system and a method embodiment or automatic inspection of branch wells is provided. An exemplary system includes a scanning head including an ultrasonic probe, wherein the ultrasonic probe includes a convex crystal. A track is mounted to a branch pipe welded to a main pipe, wherein the scanning head mounts to the track, and wherein the scanning head moves the ultrasonic probe along the track. The system includes a controller configured to display an image based on data provided from the ultrasonic probe.

A robotic device may include a housing comprising the shape of a wheel, the housing having a magnetically conductive outer surface and an inner chamber. The robotic device may include a plurality of magnetic elements disposed around the inner chamber of the housing, the plurality of magnetic elements being coupled to a first end of a power drive. The robotic device may include a processor disposed in the inner chamber of the housing, the processor being coupled to a second end of a power drive. The processor may use the power drive to instructs at least one magnetic element out of the plurality of magnetic elements to magnetize. The at least one magnetic element may be magnetized without magnetizing any other magnetic element out of the plurality of magnetic elements.

A crawler maps a structure by moving at least longitudinally or circumferentially on the structure. A probe scans the structure to generate scan data corresponding to the structure. A distance measuring unit measures a distance of the probe from a landmark extending circumferentially around the structure. An orientation sensor determines an orientation of the crawler on the structure. A processor generates a map of the scan data of the structure indexed by the distance and orientation.

A sensor assembly communicatively coupled to a processing device is configured to be disposed within and move along a pipe configured to flow a fluid. The sensor assembly includes a tubular housing configured to be centrally retained within the pipe. The tubular housing includes an outer diameter smaller than an internal diameter of the pipe. The sensor assembly also includes a plurality of ultrasonic elements coupled to and distributed evenly along an external surface of the tubular housing to define a gap between an outer surface of the ultrasonic elements and an internal surface of the pipe. The ultrasonic elements are configured to transmit ultrasonic signals and sense ultrasonic signals reflected from the internal surface of the pipe to sense corrosion and scale buildup information inside the pipe. The ultrasonic elements are configured to transmit the information to the processing device.

A method of dewatering a hydrocarbon storage tank carrying a first fluid layer that includes a first hydrogen concentration and a second fluid layer that includes a second hydrogen concentration includes receiving, from a sensor and by a processor communicatively coupled to the sensor, a value representing an amount of backscattered neutrons sensed by the sensor. The sensor is attached to a surface of a wall of the tank adjacent a fluid outlet of the storage tank. The sensor is configured to sense neutrons backscattered from the first fluid layer and an interface layer. The method includes comparing, by the processor, the value to a threshold, and actuating, by the processor, a valve fluidically coupled to the outlet of the storage tank to drain the first fluid layer from the storage tank while preventing the interface layer from leaving the storage tank.
