An outlet of the condenser is fluidly coupled to a first inlet of the PX. The system further includes a pressure gauge. The pressure gauge is configured to provide first pressure data. The first pressure data is indicative of a pressure of a fluid of the condenser. The system further includes a first controller configured to cause the motor to adjust the operating speed of the PX. The first controller causes the motor to adjust the operating speed of the PX based on the first pressure data.

A refrigeration system includes a heat exchanger including a gas cooler or condenser. The heat exchanger includes a heat exchanger inlet and a heat exchanger outlet. The refrigeration system further includes an evaporator including an evaporator inlet and an evaporator outlet. The refrigeration system further includes a compressor including a compressor inlet fluidly coupled to the evaporator outlet and a compressor outlet fluidly coupled to the heat exchanger inlet. The refrigeration system further includes a pressure exchanger (PX) including a first PX inlet fluidly coupled to the heat exchanger outlet, a first PX outlet fluidly coupled to the heat exchanger inlet, a second PX inlet fluidly coupled to the evaporator outlet, and a second PX outlet fluidly coupled to the evaporator inlet.

Refrigeration system with high speed rotary pressure exchanger

A system includes a pressure exchanger (PX), a first heat exchanger, and a second heat exchanger. The PX is configured to receive a first fluid and a second fluid, exchange pressure between the first fluid and the second fluid, and output the first fluid and the second fluid. The first heat exchanger is configured to receive the first fluid from a first gas cooler and the second fluid from a second gas cooler, exchange first heat between the first fluid and the second fluid, and output the first fluid and the second fluid. The second heat exchanger is configured to receive heat exchanger output from the first heat exchanger and evaporator output from an evaporator, exchange second heat between the heat exchanger output and the evaporator output, and provide the heat exchanger output to the PX and the evaporator output to the compressor.

A refrigeration system includes a gas cooler or a condenser configured to reject first heat from a first fluid that is at a first pressure and that is in a supercritical state or subcritical state. The refrigeration system further includes an evaporator configured to absorb second heat into a second fluid that is at a second pressure that is lower than the first pressure and that is in a liquid state, a vapor state, or a two-phase mixture of liquid and vapor. The refrigeration system further includes a rotary pressure exchanger configured to receive the first fluid from the gas cooler or the condenser, to receive the second fluid from the evaporator, and to exchange pressure, via a rotor of the rotary pressure exchanger, between the first fluid and the second fluid.

Low energy consumption refrigeration system with a rotary pressure exchanger replacing the bulk flow compressor and the high pressure expansion system

A system includes a pressure exchanger (PX) configured to receive a first fluid at a first pressure and a second fluid at a second pressure and exchange pressure between the first fluid and the second fluid. The system further includes a condenser configured to provide corresponding thermal energy from the first fluid to a corresponding environment. The system further includes a first ejector to receive a first gas and increase pressure of the first gas to form the second fluid at the second pressure. The first ejector is further to provide the second fluid at the second pressure to the PX.

A system includes a rotary liquid piston compressor configured to exchange pressure between a liquid and a supercritical fluid. The rotary liquid piston compressor includes a rotor configured to exchange pressure between the liquid and the supercritical fluid as the rotor rotates. The rotor defines channels that extend through the rotor. The rotary liquid piston compressor further includes barriers configured to block mixing between the liquid and the supercritical fluid. The barriers rest within the rotor. Each channel of the channels is configured to receive a barrier of the barriers.

The system further includes a first heat exchanger configured to provide the first fluid to the PX and provide corresponding thermal energy from the first fluid to a third fluid. The system further includes a turbine configured to receive the third fluid output from the first heat exchanger. The turbine is further configured to convert corresponding thermal energy of the third fluid into kinetic energy.

Heat pump systems with pressure exchangers

A refrigeration system includes a rotary pressure exchanger fluidly coupled to a low pressure branch and a high pressure branch. The rotary pressure exchanger is configured to receive the refrigerant at high pressure from the high pressure branch, to receive the refrigerant at low pressure from the low pressure branch, and to exchange pressure between the refrigerant at high pressure and the refrigerant at low pressure, and wherein a first exiting stream from the rotary pressure exchanger includes the refrigerant at high pressure in the supercritical state or the subcritical state and a second exiting stream from the rotary pressure exchanger includes the refrigerant at low pressure in the liquid state or the two-phase mixture of liquid and vapor.

A fluid handling system includes a pressure exchanger (PX) configured to receive a first fluid at a first pressure and a second fluid at a second pressure and exchange pressure between the first fluid and the second fluid. The system further includes a condenser configured to provide corresponding thermal energy from the first fluid to a corresponding environment. The system further includes a receiver to receive the first fluid output by the PX. The receiver forms a chamber to separate the first fluid into a first gas and a first liquid. The system further includes a first booster to increase pressure of a portion of the first gas to form the second fluid at the second pressure and provide the second fluid at the second pressure to the PX.

A system includes a pressure exchanger (PX). The PX is coupled to a motor that controls an operating speed of the PX. The system further includes a first pressure gauge configured to generate first pressure data indicative of a pressure of a fluid of a condenser. A first controller is to generate a first control signal based on the first pressure data. The motor of the PX is configured to adjust the operating speed of the PX based on the first control signal. The system further includes a pump. The system further includes a fluid density sensor for generating fluid density data associated with a first output fluid of the PX. A second controller is to generate a second control signal based on at least the fluid density data. The pump is to adjust an operating speed of the pump based on the second control signal.

A refrigeration system includes a rotary pressure exchanger fluidly coupled to a low pressure loop and a high pressure loop. The rotary pressure exchanger replaces a traditional bulk flow compressor. The rotary pressure exchanger is configured to receive the refrigerant at high pressure from the high pressure loop, to receive the refrigerant at low pressure from the low pressure loop, and to exchange pressure between the refrigerant at high pressure and the refrigerant at low pressure, and wherein a first exiting stream from the rotary pressure exchanger includes the refrigerant at high pressure in the supercritical state or the subcritical state and a second exiting stream from the rotary pressure exchanger includes the refrigerant at low pressure in the liquid state or the two-phase mixture of liquid and vapor.

A rotary liquid piston compressor and a power generation system including a first fluid loop. The first fluid loop includes a pump that circulates a liquid. A second fluid loop that generates power by circulating a supercritical fluid. The second fluid loop includes a turbine that rotates and powers a generator as the supercritical fluid flows through the turbine. A rotary liquid piston compressor fluidly coupled to the first fluid loop and the second fluid loop. The rotary liquid piston compressor exchanges pressure between the liquid circulating in the first fluid loop and the supercritical fluid circulating in the second fluid loop.

A turbomachine and a method of operating the turbomachine are disclosed. The turbomachine includes a stator, a rotor including a rotor bearing face, and a face seal assembly including a first segmented seal ring and a second segmented seal ring. The first segmented seal ring includes a plurality of joints and a first flat-contact surface and the second segmented seal ring includes a plurality of segment ends and a second flat-contact surface. One of the first and second segmented seal rings includes a seal bearing face. The second segmented seal ring is coupled to the first segmented seal ring such that the second flat-contact surface is in contact with the first flat-contact surface. The plurality of segment ends is circumferentially offset from the plurality of joints. The first segmented seal ring is slidably coupled to the stator and defines a face seal clearance between the rotor and seal bearing faces.
